Accident Factors

The crew radioed a problem with stabilizer trim and the plane was diverted to Los Angeles (Alaska Airlines) There is an Airworthiness Directive for the horizontal stabilizers on MD-80 aircraft

Related Service Bulletin - It is important to realize that this is not necessarily the cause of the accident. It is only a recognition that there have been problems with the stabilizers on some MD-80 series aircraft, the aircraft involved in the accident had no previous reports of stabilizers problems
Service Bulletin MD80-55-054 was issued by the Boeing Company on March 3, 1998

Excerpt

" ... The FAA has reviewed and approved McDonnell Douglas Service Bulletin MD80-55-054, dated March 3, 1998, which describes procedures for a one-time visual inspection to detect corrosion of the lug bores and the surface of the hinge plates of the vertical-to-horizontal stabilizer; and corrective actions, if necessary. Corrective actions include removal of corrosion that is within the limits specified in the Structural Repair Manual; and replacement of the hinge plates with new parts, if the corrosion exceeds the limits specified in the Structural Repair Manual. Accomplishment of the actions specified in the service bulletin is intended to adequately address the identified unsafe condition."Airworthiness Directives; McDonnell Douglas Model DC-9-80 FAA
