Dow Jones Industrial Average, Monthly High, 1885 - Present
Note: The figures below represent the monthly high attained by the Dow Jones
Industrial Average, obtained from sources believed to be reliable and accurate.
Readers should independently verify any data and/or consult with an investment

Charles H. Dow first experimented with a stock average on July 3, 1884. In 1889,
he and Edward D. Jones began publishing "The Wall Street Journal." Early averages
were mostly railroad stocks, so common at the time. General Electric, still listed
in the DJIA, is the only stock remaining from the original list. As you scan this
table, look for "trends." Notice how the Dow often establishes a key high, such as
crossing 100 or 1000.00 for the first time and then backslides for several months,
or years, before setting as even higher record. Notice during the 1920s how the
Dow broke through 100, then 200, then 300 and seemed bound to break through 400
only to come crashing down in the last few months of 1929.
Of greatest concern is the divisor, published each day in "The Wall Street Journal."
For the end of March, 1994 the divisor was .43416961, or app. .43417. Multiply the
actual DJIA closing point move by the divisor, then divide by the number of stocks
covered, currently 30, to get the average price move per stock.
For example, on March 2, 1994, the DJIA closed up 25.51 points. The divisor then
was app. .4442. The actual average price rise per Dow stock was just $0.33.
22.51 x .4442 = 9.999
9.999 / 30 = 0.33
On March 30, 1994 the Dow fell 72.27 points. The divisor was app. .43417. The
actual average price drop per Dow stock was $1.05.
72.27 x .43417 = 31.35
31.38 / 30 = $1.05
On January 1, 1994 the divisor was .44731238. By January 1, 1997 it was
.25089315. The DJIA high for the month of January, 1994 was 3,978.36 and
6,906.22 for January, 1997; a 73.6% increase. By contrast, General Motors'
stock only rose some 22.3% for the same period.
Knowing this helps keep things in perspective.
Other Notes:
For 1885 only, the Dow average contained 12 railroad stocks and 2 industrials.
From 1886 to 1889, it consisted of 10 rails and 2 industrials. Starting in
October, 1889, it consisted of 18 rails and 2 industrials. This average was
discontinued on May 25, 1896 and a new average commenced on June 1, 1896. In
1897 the first "all industrials" DJIA was formed with 12 industrials, while the
rails were made into a separate group.
New York Stock Exchange closed August thru November, 1914, for World War I;
reopened December 1914 with a new DJIA list. In September, 1916, a new DJIA
was created using 20 industrials. From October 1, 1928 to the present the
DJIA has included 30 stocks.
