James Alfred Leathers was born 1775 in South Carolina. He died July 3, 1838 leaving land in the 10th District of Bedford Co. TN. Some of this property was left to his wife Margaret and children: John V. Leathers, H. D. and Elizabeth Leathers Callen, and Elijah and Nancy Leathers Smotherman. This land, located near Coopertown, was sold to Frederick Batte in 1848. James Alfred Leathers was probably married at least twice, but no definite proof has been found as to the identity of his first wife or his parents, but his first child was Nancy M. Leathers, my ancestor.
