New York Asanteman Association to Raise $40,000Nana Sarpong Nyantakyi, New York Asantefuohene and the Queen Mother, Nana Sarpong Afrakoma are leading the Asanteman Association of New York on an ambitious campaign to raise funds for two major hospitals in Ghana. The targeted amount of $40,000 is to be used entirely for rehabilitation projects at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital in Accra and the Okomfo Anokye Hospital in Kumasi. The campaign will be formally launched at a year-end charity dance to be held at the posh Armenian Hall in lower Manhattan, NYC on Christmas Day. The critically acclaimed Chicago band, Dansika is billed to provide live music for the throng of fun seekers who are expected to pack the large hall. Nana Nyantakyi told Asenta in a brief interview that the idea for this first of a kind venture came from a charge given all Ashantis by the new Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu during his installation last May. "Otumfuo told us to leave our footprints in the sands of time. My executives and I chose the hospitals because we believe medical facilities in Ghana require a critical infusion of funds. This is how we wish to be remembered", Nana Nyantakyi said. Several African-owned businesses in the United States have been approached to donate in cash and kind to support the effort. Other patrons are being asked to donate $30 per person for the all-night party. |
GAW Collects $600 for Heart SurgeonThe Ghanaian Association of Westchester (GAW) has lit the torch for a campaign to support the one and only clinic in Ghana that specializes in heart and cardiology medicine. According to the association's president, Mr. Martin Ansah, an impromptu appeal made at a general meeting on Nov bagged $600, which will be remitted to the clinic shortly. "This is only a preliminary move. We are putting together a program by which we will launch a formal and aggressive campaign to secure funds and equipment for the extremely wonders that Dr. Frempong-Boateng is performing in our country. He needs the support of all who can help", said Mr. Ansah. Dr. Frempong Boateng, an internationally acclaimed heart surgeon runs the National Cardiothracic Center, the only center that specializes in heart and other cardiac ailments in the country. In fact, until recently, he was the only the heart surgeon in the West African country. Founded about three years ago, GAW is gradually turning out to be one of the most progressive African immigrant organizations in the eastern seaboard area of the United States. Based in Yonkers, Westchester County, the group boasts of a membership of over 180 that cuts across the many ethno-linguistic cultures of West Africa. Under its current leadership, the association has demonstrated a strong tilt towards community concerns not usually seen with older groups in the area. Last summer it donated $300 and a large cache of first aid medicines to Ghana's Black Queens soccer team then campaigning for international honors in the FIFA women's world cup competition. |
