| Haywood Bunn Arrington |
| The Arrington Family
Tree has been a labor of love for several of our family members. Due to
the diligence of these members we are now able to trace our roots back
several generations. We have collected the names of almost 2000 individuals,
some 600 or so being descendants of Haywood Bunn Arrington. Here is the
story as it was related to me.
Born in about 1825 in Tarboro, North Carolina, Haywood Bunn Arrington was believed to be the mulatto child of Redmun Bunn, a white plantation owner, and a female salve of unknown name. It is told that Haywood was raised in the household and educated with the sons of the house. In his teens, Haywood was sold to a Dr. John Arrington, a neighbor of Mr. Bunn. There are many indications supporting the idea that these two men were acquainted on a social level. Both were elected to the House of Commons for North Carolina from the same county, and several wills and documents in the county bear their names in some capacity. |

| During a visit, I was able to find a record of conscription for a Dr. John Arrington into the Confederate Army during the Civil War at the National Archives. On this record was a listing of his personal property at the time of his discharge. A Negro assistant by the name of Haywood was listed. This would lend some credence to the story that Haywood was educated. It can only be speculation at this point that Mr. Bunn sold Haywood to Dr. Arrington with the intent of his becoming a medical assistant to the doctor. | |
| Around 1843 Haywood married Fannie Boyd Plummer, daughter of William Boyd, who from an old photo appears to be either a white man or a quadroon, and Louisa Pike. Fannie was owned by Sue Plummer. It is not known how Fannie ended up in the Plummer household. | |
| After the Civil War Haywood and Fannie changed their name from Bunn to Arrington. Fannie and Haywood had seven children; Ella Belle, Suzie, John Plummer, Henry Haywood, Frank, William and Robert Henderson. It is believed that Haywood and Fannie lived on the Summerville Plantation for a short period of time before moving to Warrenton where Haywood built a home and farmed land there with his children. | |
| What we know of the 7 children is the basis of the family tree. Some of the family has been lost over time. We do not know what happened to William other that the rumor that he went west to Oklahoma. Perhaps he left North Carolina after an altercation with another man. There is some evidence that this is the reason for his departure and that he may have slipped over into the white society and be lost to us forever. We also have no information on Frank. | |
| We do know that Ella Belle married a John Cooper and that she later move to New York and changed her name to Van Cooper. Suzie married twice, first a Mr. Clayton, and second to James Robert Bailey, Jr. of Southampton Long Island. Suzie had 2 or 3 children from her first marriage and had four children from the second; Delancy, Ethel, Gladys, and James Edgar. | |
| John Plummer Arrington married Ms. Minnie Farrow in New York City in 1883, and had 2 children. From what little I know of him it appears that the family was well to do. | |
| Henry Haywood and Robert Henderson are responsible for the bulk of the clan that we now know. Between them they had 15 children, 62 grandchildren, 100 great-grandchildren and still counting. |
