17. What are the differences between you and your opponent(s) on abortion and reproductive rights?

I do not know my opponents' views on abortion and reproductive rights.

18. What impact could this issue have on your race?

The issue of abortion is extremely divisive. The office of State Auditor does not have any legislative function. If elected, I will comply with all applicable state statutes, regardless of my personal beliefs.

My view is that abortion should be legal in some circumstances, but not necessarily all circumstances. As a Libertarian I am generally opposed to taxpayer funding for health care, and I dislike all government interference or compulsion in what should be private medical decisions. I believe that government welfare spending encourages dependency rather than fostering self-sufficiency.

I have no problem with health care professionals who choose not to perform abortions as a matter of conscience. I have no problem with privately funded agencies or charities performing elective abortions. I do not disapprove of women who choose to have abortions due to rape, incest, abandonment by the man who impregnated her, or for personal health reasons. It's a very difficult choice and I have no desire to make that decision for someone else.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my views. I do not believe the abortion issue has any bearing on the duties of the Missouri State Auditor, but you are certainly entitled to know them.

Sincerely yours,
