Once upon a time, there was an Irish Setter named "Ladygirl" (shudder!) that no one loved. Lady was six months old, very intelligent and obedient with a beautful, shiny coat. But she was taken to the local shelter, anyhow. ISC San Antonio Rescue got her. Contact with her breeder was attempted by phone and by certified mail without success. Lady was put on the List in late November. Word was passed about Lady to two daughters in eastern New Mexico whose father had recently lost his Irish Setter of many years. Pictures were sent, e-mails burned the phone lines along with faxes and excitement was building. Lady was the one they were seeking. Lady began the trip to her new home this past Friday. |
| Now how were they going to keep it a surprise from Dad until Christmas? A suggestion was made to keep Lady at a friend's until Christmas Eve and then bring her over. And other suggestions such as having "Santa" drop her off from his miniature red pickup and eight tiny cylinders. | ![]() |

But the ladies could not contain themselves and knew one of them would
blow the secret before this Friday morning so it was decided to give
"Lady" to Dad on Saturday. Dad was sat down in front of the tree and
given a Christmas card containing the e-mail describing Lady in it.
While reading the e-mail, one of the daughters went out to the SUV to
get Lady. A big red bow was put around her neck and she was led in.
The other daughter was videoing the proceedings. Dad was speechless as
Lady came bounding into the house as if she had lived there forever!
She jumped up on him and licked him all over and played with the little
children but not knocking them over.
And the two loving daughters and their Mom would like to thank Irish Setter Rescue for giving "Dad the best Christmas present he could ask for". |
Dad, it was our pleasure. May you and Lady have many, many Christmases together! And Merry Christmas from the ISC of San Antonio. Our Christmas prayer is that all the rescue kids get their Christmas wish!
The rescue placement with Lady went very smoothly, about as text book as you could want.
We would like to thank Cheri Sauter of Albuquerque for getting Lady's new family in touch with us in San Antonio and advising the new family. And we would like to thank Heidi Cole for doing the local groundwork in Clovis. Heidi and Cheri are a well-oiled team. Thank you, ladies.
And we would also like to thank our vet, Dr. Eric Lange. Dr. Lange has seen several dozen Irish Setter Rescues come through his doors in the last few years, in all sorts of conditions. He has gone out of his way at even odd hours, to help one of ours. And the bills have been cut to accommodate our meagre funds, also. But this time, after cutting the surgery bill, he volunteered to drive Lady about two thirds of the way on to her new home in New Mexico. Thanks, Doc.
And with the wonders of e-mail and the fax machine, we are able to place a dog around the country in a matter of days instead of placing it around the state in a matter of weeks. And put it in to the home where it really belonged in the first place, where it will get the love and attention it deserves - and will return doubly.
Thanks again to all of the above. A bunch of professionals. But with soft centers. Merry Christmas to you all!
Fred Jurman and, of course, Linda
