The writing of this history and genealogy of the descendants of Nicholas Evertson has come about through the collaboration of three descendants of Jacob Roeters Evertson, a great great grandson of Nicholas Evertson. Anne Rast is descended from Jacob's son George Phillips Evertson. Ray Diltz descends from his son Henry Wisner Evertson and Robert Sarlls descends from his daughter Julia Evertson.
Most of the early work on the genealogy of the family was done by Mary Nicoll Woodward Putnam. She was an active member of the DAR and helped many other family members join the DAR. Her work was done in the 1890's and was published in the Memorial Cyclopedia of New Jersey, Volume 3. Then in the 1930's Mary McKay of Evansville, Indiana, made contact with numerous family members and passed along the genealogy of the Evertson and Phillips families which included the grandparents of Anne and Ray. The genealogy contained numerous names and dates but very little information on the history and lives of our ancestors. It was the quest for the stories of the lives of our ancestors that resulted in this book.
Robert Sarlls however was not so lucky. His grandfather had left Kentucky, gone to New York and left his family with little if any history of their roots. Robert was however fortunate to live in New York City and was able to quite easily find the basic information on the family in the New York City Library. We were put in touch with each other through historians in New York whom we had each contacted in our search for information.
One of our most helpful finds was the genealogy of the family written by Thomas E.V. Smith. Another was locating George Evertson in Austin, Texas. He is the son of George Bloom Evertson of Tennessee who had done a great deal of work on the history of the family. During a move to Texas by his wife after George's death, all of his papers were lost. However, his nephew John Graham Evertson Jr. wrote a history of the family using information obtained from his uncle and other sources. It was extremely helpful in identifying the descendants of George Bloom Evertson of New York, a great grandson of Nicholas Evertson.
Two other major sources of information were the works of Henry Evertson Cobb and Henry Hornbeck Miller.
