Question: My ZIP/Jaz has taken over my CD-ROM's drive letter under Windows 95/98!! How do I fix it?

Go to System Properties, there are three ways:
    1) If you have a fancy new keyboard with the Windows logo keys on it, hold one of them down (like a shift key) and hit the Pause/Break key.
    2) Right click the 'My Computer' icon on your Desktop, and select Properties.
    3) From your Start Menu, go to Settings/Control Panel, then double-click the System icon.

Once the System properites window is open, click on the Device Manager tab. This will show the device tree.

Click the '+' next to Disk drives to expand the disk drive tree.

Double-click on your IOMEGA ZIP 100 (or similar device.)

  Click on the Settings tab.

At the bottom is a section showing the 'Current drive letter assignment.' Below that is a panel for 'Reserved drive letters' with pull-down boxes next to the letters. If these boxes are greyed out and unchangable, make certain that 'Int 13 Unit' in the upper section is NOT checked.

Click on the down-arrow next to 'Start drive letter' and pick a letter to use. A common one is Z. The 'End drive letter' will normally change to be the same, and should always be the same as the Start drive letter.

Once done, click on the OK button. You will need to reboot to put it into effect.

You may need to add a 'LASTDRIVE=Z' to your CONFIG.SYS (I don't know if this is normally needed for Win95/98.)

You can also do the same thing for your CD-ROM! Just expand the CD-ROM part of the device tree and make the changes as above. A common letter is R. It's nice to get it up high before you start installing everything so it's out of the way of drive changes. Depending on your software, you may have to tell it the new letter by altering the 'Properties' of any icons, looking for an .INI file or Registry entry, or if it's nice enough to ask. Bad software will require reinstallation.
