The AMBRICAN Basset Hound kennel is a show-oriented kennel that had its beginnings in three different countries before it eventually came together in America. Penny Frederiksen began her career in bassets by following her mother's lead in England, owning her foundation bitch in 1970, and later taking her hounds with her to Canada. In America, Randy Frederiksen was successful at showing and had began breeding and showing in 1972; having owned a basset hound since 1968. The current kennel name of AMBRICAN was first used in 1982. It came from the combination of the three countries involved: America, Britain and Canada as well as the fact that having met in Canada, Penny is British, and Randy is American. This kennel has completed 60 championship titles, 10 obedience titles, and 4 tracking titles. It has produced three Basset Hound Club of America national winners: Am/Can. CH Ambrican Lipizzan (Best of Breed), CH Ambrican Trademark (Winners Dog / Best of Winners), CH Ambrican Ft. Merrill Yasmin; as well as an all-breed Best In Show hound, Am/Can. CH Ambrican Ivan and many regional and local specialty winners. Breeding approximately once a year, AMBRICAN has striven to produce balanced hounds that are able to successfully compete in the ring and be structurally sound enough to accomplish the breed's task in the field. Having learned much from our experience and association with the pack hunting techniques of the Timber Ridge Pack, many things became far more important than were in the past. Endurance through sound structure, including great feet and long rib cages started to take on even more importance to the kennel's ideals after becoming involved with an active pack of hunting bassets. Their basset experience began in 1968 with a companion pet and continued through the BHCA five-years later. Penny is a championship show judge in England and has also judged many sweepstakes in the USA and Canada. Randy has judged numerous matches and sweepstakes over the years in the same three countries. Holding memberships in local and national breed clubs as well as all breed clubs since 1972, Penny and Randy are currently local members of the BHC of Gtr. San Antonio. Penny, having received honors from her work with the Medina KC in Ohio, is now serving as the BHC of Greater San Antonio’s Club Secretary. Randy has served as president of two all-breed clubs, two specialty clubs and has held BHCA positions of responsibility ranging from committee member to president (2000-04). Awarded Life Membership in 2003, Randy authored the book, Basset Hound, A World History in 1987; contributed chapters on the Origins, History, Modern Development and Pack Hunting to the BHCA-sponsored Official Book of the Basset Hound (1997) by Bob Booth; and the historical information on Basset Hounds in America used in The Basset Hound by Marianne Nixon (UK 1999). The Register of Merit is awarded by the Basset Hound Club of America to the top producing Basset Hound Sires and Dams who have offspring finishing AKC titles in conformation, obedience, field trials, or tracking. The title "ROM" following a basset's registered name designates a sire that has had seven get finish AKC titles or a dam who has had five produce finish AKC titles. BHCA members who own these hounds are given an award at the annual meeting. CH. Coran’s My Pick O’George, ROM - CH. Coran’s Penelope O’George, ROM Am/Can CH. Coran Country Chaz, ROM - CH.
