Willy Albanes' Family Pictures on Feb 2000 trip

This is me, Willy, and my daughter Jennifer, in Mobile having dinner and drinks with her buddies at their regular Tuesday night jaunt to a Mexican restaurant for their Margarita Special. I was on my way down to Miami to visit the family.

These are my cousins Carolina and Carlos Valentin, in Miami. Carlos is uncle Benito's son, but he also takes care of my mother like a good son would, so he's mom's virtual son. Carlos and Carola have been together since they were kids. They still have 2 boys at home and one has flown the coup... amazing!

Cousins Maria Elena and Manuel and I having dinner at a nice seafood restaurant on The Florida Keys, on the water. Maria Elena keeps herself very trim, and hasn't aged a bit. They are both avid sailors. Own a Catalina 22 now, but have just sold their 34' steel-hulled sailboat they built themselves many years ago.

Me and aunt Melita, my favorite aunt, in Miami, after a delicious lunch she made of black beans and rice and croquetas... my favorite! I went later to pick up some churros for desert at Eigth Street! It's tough visiting Miami and not gaining weight!

Uncles Benito and Pancho and I were having lunch at La Carreta, at Little Havana (Calle Ocho), in Miami. My favorite restaurant is Versalles, across the street, but tio Pancho and I ate there the previous day. Their stories about Cuba, Fidel and communism entretain, disgust and delight all at the same time.

Me and cousins Maria Elena and Manuel closeup (I was holding the camera at arm's length) in the keys. We were discussing boats and the current Miami Boat Show. Manuel was going to the show to look for a new outboard for his 22.

My mother and uncle Pancho are in their mid-to-late 80's. Tio Pancho and I ended up going around Miami shopping and talking most of three days. My grandmother lived with us when I was a boy, and tio Pancho used to come and visit her every Sunday. Due to his regular visits, we because close.

Cousins Carolina and Carlos Valentin. He's a living saint... has always done, and continues to do, a lot for the family. He checks up on my mother and helps her out. And Carolina is a lot of fun! Carolina's family owned a Civil Engineering company. Carlos worked many years for, and retired from, IBM's office machine division.

Uncles Benito and Pancho are now both using a cane, due to knee problems, and neither wants to do an artificial knee operation. But they are both very strong, and their minds very clear. Benito was a chemist by schooling and trade: He headed the family's distelleries, in Cuba. Exhile in Miami has been tough for them and for the family.

Me and my mother. I had a two-week beard stubble by then (the Miami Vice look), and am towering over mom. Mom has osteo of the spine, and is bent over like a pretzel. She has lasted a long time for someone who has never done any exercise at all her entire life (minus a two-year work stint). Dad died Christmas Eve 1987.
