Since 1971 in the Middle East and 1985 in the United States, Aziz Ismail has been providing Arabic<>English translation and interpretation services for government and private entities, including the U.S. District Courts, the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Environment Program, the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies (NESA) at the National Defense University (U.S Department of Defense), the National Center for State Courts and multinational corporations and law firms. In October 2004, he received conference level status from the U.S. Department of State.

Aziz Ismail has been a full-time freelance translator and interpreter for over 25 years. He received his Arabic-into-English certification by the American Translators Association in 1994, and holds “professionally qualified” federal court interpreter status since 1991. In September 1993, he placed first in a national recruitment examination. Based in Chicago, he works throughout the U.S. and the world as a simultaneous and consecutive conference, escort, federal court, and seminar interpreter. His services include editing; curriculum development for interpreter testing and training; instruction, narration and voiceover; brand name analysis; web page localization; and music composition and arrangement.

His technical specialties include advertising, aviation, computer technology, environmental, legal, medical, military, scientific, and telecommunications. He is the author of the Egyptian Arabic chapter in the book, Ultimate Arabic: Beginner-Intermediate, the Living Language series published by Random House. His article, “Cultural Awareness and the Arabic Interpreter” was originally published in Proteus, the newsletter of the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT), in Winter 2002, and reprinted in The ATA Chronicle, the journal of the American Translators Association in August 2002. The article addresses topics of relevance to Arabic interpreters and those who utilize their services since September 11, 2001.

Born in Cairo, Egypt in 1954, Ismail grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts and returned to Egypt in 1967 to attend Victoria College. He received his B.A. in English and Translation from Ain Shams University after switching from Cairo University medical school to the College of Languages. He has also been a music arranger, composer and performing artist, and has scored films and television themes.
