Cessna Crashes, Killing Pilot

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.      A twin-engine airplane taking off from Pulliam Airport crashed near Interstate 17 just south of the airport, killing the pilot. He had filed a flight plan in Albuquerque.

 

The Cessna reportedly had engine trouble Tuesday night before it crashed, killing the only person aboard, said Tim Paupore, spokesman for the Highlands Fire District.

 

The pilot was the only person aboard. His name was not immediately released.

 

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to examine the crash site.

 

 

There's been a fatal plane crash in northern Arizona

A twin-engine Cessna crashed last night shortly after taking off from Flagstaff's Pulliam Airport.

 

The pilot was thrown from the plane and killed instantly. He was the only person aboard.

 

A spokesman for the Highlands Fire District says the pilot had filed a flight plan with the airport in Albuquerque.

 

The victim's name wasn't immediately released.

 

The plane crashed in flames on a hillside about two miles southwest of the airport. The crash site is near Interstate 17 and a quarter of a mile from a Kachina Village trailer park.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.

 

The pilot was thrown from the plane and killed instantly. He was the only person aboard. He's identified as 32-year-old Mark Conte.

 

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office says Conte filed a flight plan in Albuquerque and was flying from Page to Phoenix.

 

Conte worked for a courier company and was transporting bank documents, blood and body tissue.

 

The plane crashed in flames on a hillside about two miles southwest of the airport. The crash site is near Interstate 17 and a quarter of a mile from a Kachina Village trailer park.

 

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board arrived earlier today to examine the crash site.

The twin-engine Cessna was operated by a New Mexico air freight company, Aero Charter. Pilot Mark Conte of Escondido, California, was on his way to Phoenix Tuesday night with bank documents and blood and tissue samples.

 

The plane crashed two miles south of Flagstaff's Pulliam Airport shortly after take-off.

 

There was intermittent snow at the time in the area and clouds had diminished visibility to approximately one mile.

 

Pulliam Airport staff told sheriff's investigators that they heard the plane overhead experiencing trouble.

 

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
