Pilot found dead on Long Island

(Kodiak-AP) -- The pilot of a small plane that lost contact Monday with air traffic controllers on Kodiak was found dead on Long Island.  He's identified as 56 year old Mark D. Mueller of Anchorage.

Alaska State Troopers say Mueller was the only person on board.

Traffic controllers at the Federal Aviation Administration Tower on Kodiak reported they lost contact with the Beechcraft plane on its final approach just before noon.

Troopers say four minutes later, they received an emergency location transmitter tone.

A Coast Guard helicopter found the pilot and plane about 12:45 p-m. on Long Island. That's about five miles east of Kodiak.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
