Peanuts, Our Beloved Puppy Dog

A few weeks after returning from Germany in 1964, we decided the time was right to, once again, have animal companionship. We didn't know about cats then, but we did know about dogs. We went to the animal shelter on a gray, autumn day to choose a dog. So many dogs, all barking for our attention. In this particular kennel, a medium-sized shepherd mix made his way to the front. His tail wagging away, offering his best greetings. He made the choice easy. This was our guy. His name, Peanuts.

After filling out the necessary paperwork, vet check, vaccinations, and other stuff, Peanuts came home. He wasn't too sure about his dog house, so he spent his first night inside. The next day, everything was okay. The dog house perfect. The backyard, his kingdom.

To say the least, Peanuts was a very, very friendly dog. His tail was always wagging. A good companion and loyal friend. Trusted family member. Marvelous with our people friends. Peanuts was the perfect dog. Though he didn't show it, Peanuts was quite smart. Granted when he got out of the yard a couple times, we would find him on the front step of the house across the street. When we called for him, Peanuts came over wagging his tail and wondering what took us so long.

Peanuts was a dog always ready for play, especially catch. He wanted to catch the ball and then run around with it. Your role was to chase him. After a few minutes, he would let you catch him and then he would give you the ball back. Lots of fun, lots of exercise.

Peanuts lived a long, full life. Old age and illness caught up with this lively and friendly dog in September 1980. The time to let him rest came a few weeks later. We remember the countless good times. Though he has been gone awhile, there are those moments when we know he's nearby. Wagging his tail, and waiting for a belly rub.
