Bravo Cat, A Brave Kitty

In mid-May 2003, a gray and white tuxedo cat appeared on our front porch. He braved the rainy weather we were experiencing at the time, running (or walking) between the raindrops. We knew this kitty had traveled the cat trail through the backyard, walking along the side of the house, and jumping onto the porch. In these first few days, he would stay for 5-10 minutes before resuming his explorations. We finally introduced ourselves through the door, asking what was his name, where he lived, how far he traveled, etc. But, what made this kitty extra special was the six toes on his front paws. It was decided we would call him Bravo Cat.

Like all of the kitty visitors to our front porch, he noticed the small bowls of dry cat food and water. Hospitality and refreshments. It didn't take long for his visits to become more frequent. He was very cautious at first. After three or four weeks, Bravo decided it wasn't necessary to be overly cautious. By summer's arrival, he was a regular visitor. Bravo would appear on our porch by mid-morning each day. Of course, there were a few days he wouldn't show up at all. We guessed his family had kept him in for the day. But, Bravo would show up the next day. Nicely brushed. His coat shiny and clean. He was ready to spend the day on our porch. When it became hot, Bravo relaxed in our flower beds. Cool, refreshing, definitely fragrant. He was enjoying himself.

Bravo knew other cats visited the front porch. He was very wary of them. Of the other cats, Bravo made friends with the cat we call Mittens. They learned to pal around with each other. They played together, they relaxed together, they ate together. They even napped together. They could find each other on our porch. Their closeness suggested Bravo and Mittens knew each other quite well. May be living with the same family.

Bravo discovered he could come early in the morning. He also made himself more comfortable on the porch furniture. And, he found his meow, becoming more talkative. At times, Bravo would give those "can I come in" gazes. Though he couldn't, Bravo always knew he would be welcomed on our porch. With this knowledge, Bravo was learning he could trust us to be kind.

We remember this sweet, little cat with an angelic face. The six toes on his front paws. His soft meows. His disposition was very cheery. Very smart, very patient. Though we only know him as Bravo Cat, he was certainly a brave little kitty. To come and visit our front porch everyday. Not to be forgotten, we claim you as our own. We will miss your presence very much.
