PERHAPS ONE QUEST TOO MANY

by Alfred D. Byrd

In a long-ago kingdom tragedy had struck: the King's crown had been stolen by a pair of
hideous ogres known as the Sturds. Heralds journeying throughout the land proclaimed the
King's offer: "To whatever man shall travel to the Cave of the Sturds and bring back thence our
crown, we will give the hand of our daughter in marriage."
Brave young Sir Henry, in love with the Princess, announced to her his determination to
make the quest. "Oh, Sir Henry," she replied in distress, " the dangers that you will face will be
manifold and deadly. Go see the Great Wizard. Perhaps he can give you victory over the
Sturds."
The Great Wizard listened gravely to Sir Henry's story. Stroking his long white beard,
he thought awhile; then a light came into his eyes. Reaching into a cabinet, he took out a long,
hard, white object and handed it to Sir Henry.
The young knight eyed the wizard's gift mistrustfully. "What is this?"
"This is the femur of the Sacred Giraffe," the Great Wizard explained. "It will aid you on
 your quest."
Still skeptical, Sir Henry set out. Over hills, across rivers, through valleys he made his way
to the Cave of the Sturds. When at last he arrived there, two hideous ogres, snarling fiercely,
bounded towards him. One! Two! he whacked each over the head with the sacred femur. The
ogres fell lifeless at his feet.
Thus, Sir Henry became doubly renowned. Not only did he rescue the crown and marry
the Princess, but he also became the first person in history to kill two Sturds with one bone.
