ACDP/Padres
Para Padres Weekend Recreation Program
-
The
ACDP/Padres para Padres
Weekend Recreational Program provides professionally-designed
recreation activities to 20 developmentally-disabled youth aged 5-21
every Saturday, while providing respite to their parents.
This exciting project grew from ACDP’s support of an 18-month
volunteer recreation/respite program conducted by Padres
para Padres de Washington Heights, a grassroots organization of
parents of children with developmental disabilities. This
collaborative program is
funded by the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and
Developmental Disability (OMRDD). ACDP and Padres para Padres have
committed additional resources beyond OMRDD funding to permit the
inclusion of a number of siblings without disabilities in order to
provide an inclusive environment. Activities include swimming during
the summer, computer use, visual arts, music, dance, movement,
literacy activities, and field trips within and beyond the community.
