What was inside the hearts and minds of these two children that would allow them to kill and enjoy killing their fellow students? Everything they did was already illegal. Common accessibility of guns is NOT the issue - they are accessible to millions of young people who would never, in their wildest dreams, consider doing anything of this sort.
We need to have open discussion about what went wrong with these children's lives which affected them in this way. Being an out cast is also a media misnomer. This all makes good media hype, but has little to do with the issue here.
Teenagers, you want to help? Demand that Hollywood STOP the violence!! Don't give your money to see a movie, listen to music or play video games, which promote violence. While you may feel this doesn't affect you, what about the person next to you? Don't count on game makers, movie and record producers to stop the violence - they will not. Why? They DON'T care, that is the bottom line. If they did, they wouldn't be making this sort of stuff. The actors DON'T care, or they wouldn't take parts in these kinds of things. The music artist's DON'T care, or they wouldn't write, compose music for, or record these types of things. As long as they live the high life in Hollywood (or where ever), they could care less about what child re-enacts a scene from their movie and kills real people. What will make them stop is if young people boycott and even picket their movies, concerts and games, as being a CAUSE of this kind of tragedy. They care about MONEY. This is their cause and they use you! They use you! Don't allow them too!!
Parents, you want to help? Get to know your children! Know what they see when they go to the movies with friends (that means view them yourself, not just know a title and a lead actor!!), know what music they listen to (read the words!!) - don't buy a new van which advertises headphones so the kids can listen to what THEY want without it bothering you - BE "bothered" enough to get to know your children!. Know what your child views and places on the internet! The internet is uncensored and there is no way a site can ban someone from viewing it because of their age or mental state. Know what video games they are playing - not just a name, play one through to the end and see for yourself what they are doing!! Parenting is something which takes time, but if you love your children you WILL take the time!
Parents get to KNOW who your children are and who their friends are!! While you get to know your children, take a close look at yourself and your contribution to your family life as well. If you care about your children, your flesh and blood, at all, you will want to get to know them. Get involved in your school and community. Don't quit, calling them a finished product when they reach their most vulnerable ages - as one of the parents of one of these killers is reported to have called his son - A finished product, but it was "finished" only because the parents let it be and it also a very defective finished product.
While you may know your child, it only took 2 children out of close to 2 thousand. The school was warned! The local police was warned! 15 are dead, and for up to a year before this incident the school and law enforcement KNEW that there was a potential very deadly problem. Why didn't they care enough to check things out? We don't know, but they didn't. They didn't care for the victims, nor the number of potential victims. They also didn't care enough for the perpetrators of this act - two lost souls who no one cared enough about to even check into what they were up to.
Pressure AOL and other internet providers to accept complaints and removes sites which are full of hate and violence. Report the site to local authorities. The providers of the web space DO (or they can with little effort) keep track of traffic to these sites, support having them turn that information over to the authorities as well.
Let everyone know that making it open season on Christians isn't acceptable. Let Disney know! Let the networks know! Let music companies know! This is an under reported side to most of what has been happening. Christians are easy targets. They are some of the most hated people out there, and the media has made it plain that it is open season on them!
MOST IMPORTANT of all make sure your children (parents) and your friends (teenagers) are prepared for the worst possible situation. None of us are promised tomorrow. When you leave home in the morning, you may not see each other again. So please make sure that they have had an opportunity to meet God and to choose life through His Son Jesus Christ.
If there is a visible blessing in this situation, it is the witness of those who died bearing witness to the saving grace of God. While we morn the loss from our lives (and for the extended American family the loss of a piece of our national, moral character), we also know that many of the lives taken from this earth on that fateful day of violence have in fact gone home to be with their God and Savior. What a secure feeling some of the grieving parents have in the secure knowledge that their children may have been the victim of fleeting violence, but that indeed it was fleeting and that their children are safe with God. But what a horrible double and eternal loss for parents who don't have that secure knowledge. Tell your children and friends that God truly loves them, so much that Jesus Christ gave His life for them. And during this time of recovery, pull your family closer to God and depend on Him to get you through this time.
Praise God for all. Praise Him for those who survived. Many have been quoted as saying that they feel they were saved for a reason. Praise God that He didn't allow the bombs to go off the way these boys had planned. And thank Him for the courage of those who gave their life while presenting a witness to their fellow students.
