** Washington, D.C. **
May 4, 1999: My first tour of Washington, D.C. What an experience! We walked 5 miles in 5 1/2 hours! What a trek...I've never been so happy to stop walking. :o)
Below is a map of Washington, D.C. The blue highlighted area is the path we took, starting at the subway stop at the USDA to Union Station, where we wearily boarded the subway and headed back to a comfy home. :o)
The map was, well, a huge normal size map. My scanner doesn't scan items that large, so I had to scan it in two parts and piece it together the best way I knew how (which wasn't that good!). It's still large, and I know it probably took forever to load...(sorry). It took me forever, too, if that makes you feel better! :o)
While in Washington, I took over my role of photography enthusiast, and started snapping away. I am happy with the nice results, and hope you enjoy them as well! :o)
First Stop:
Washington Monument
2nd Stop:
Jefferson Memorial
3rd Stop:
FDR Memorial (FDR and his dog, Falla)
On the way...
...the Arts of War
4th Stop:
The Lincoln Memorial
(and me sitting on the steps)
the words read:
"In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever."
5th Stop:
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
...in the back of the White House.
(I was surprised by the size, I thought it was bigger!) :o)
6th Stop:
Ford's Theater
7th Stop:
William E. Petersen Boarding House
(The House Where Lincoln Died)
On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln and his wife attended a play at Ford's Theater. John Wilkes Booth took the opportunity he had been waiting for to assassinate the President. Lincoln was mortally wounded in the attack and was taken across the street to the Petersen Boarding House where he died nine hours later at 7:22 am on April 15, 1865.
8th Stop:
U. S. Capitol
Last Stop:
Union Station
(No picture. Reason: no energy left to take one!) :o)
Lunch at Union Station, then back on the subway and "home" to suburban Maryland! Whew! What a day! :o)
