VIRTUAL TANGIER:
A Mosaic of Eyes and Voices |
![]() |
Visions of the City 430 BC - 2000The universal perception of Tangier is like a mosaic, made up of many little pieces, a collection of many small encounters recordedand passed on by spirits large and small over the centuries. So it seems appropriate that one of the oldest, most valuable artifacts found in Tangier is in fact a mosaic. |

It shows the goddess Io guiding a ship and a crew of nymphs through the straits. Some of the tiles are ugly and rough, some bright and shiny; a few sparkle like jewels. Each piece is far less than its contribution to the whole. It is only when you stand back and take them all in together that they begin to illuminate. The power of the whole creates a new metaphor, a fabric with a unique texture and aroma which comes away with you and lingers in the mind. |
| Along the ocean coast there is a long stand of trees which runs several miles from the Monte Viejo ("Old Mountain") and the sultan's Palace, to Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. It is made up of towering eucalyptus, scrubby evergreen pines, and graceful mimosas. The shade is deep and cool when the summer sun attacks like a bare bulb in a cloistered room. And when the mimosas are in bloom, the combined fragrance would be too heavy and sweet to bear, anywhere else. But it is cut with the sting of ocean salt carried by the breezes off the Atlantic, and breathing it in restores and refreshes the soul. |
| This unique perfume is like my favorite memories of Tangier. You have to be in the right time, place, and frame of mind to capture the fugitive moment. But once experienced, it becomes a part of your body, and you carry it with you forever. |
