VIRTUAL TANGIER: Visions of the City

c. 1911-1916 Henri Matisse
Matisse made several sojourns in Tangier, always staying at the Hotel Villa de France.  You can still visit his room where he painted the view out the window.   "I have found landscapes in Morocco," he claimed, "exactly as they are described in Delacroix's paintings."
1.  1912 "View of the Bay"
2. 1911 "View from the Window, Tangier"  3. 1912 "The Casbah Gate"
 4. c. 1912 "Zora on the Terrace"  5. c. 1913 "The Riffian"
Three of these works were intended by Matisse as a Moroccan triptych for the collector Ivan Morozov; "Window at Tangier"  was to hang on the left, "Zorah" in the middle, and "Entrance to the Casbah" on the right.
6.  1916 "The Moroccans"
