Authority and responsibility is vested in the membership of the congregation. USNH is administered by an elected Board of Trustees and Officers and a paid staff. Kathleen has served as minister to the Unitarian Society of New Haven since 1991. Prior to that she served the UU Fellowship of Winston-Salem, NC as extension minister for three and a half years. She received her Masters of Divinity Degree from Starr King School for Ministry in 1987 and was ordained in April of that year by the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, NY.

Thomas Reid(Tom) has been a member at USNH since 1977 and has served on several committees including the Endowment Committee and the Committee on Ministry. He has been Vice President of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the Program Council for the past two years. Tom was remarried three years ago to Carolanne Capron-Reid and together they have 5 daughters, three sons-in-law and five grandchildren here in CT and in TX. Tom is employed by Geriatric and Adult Psychiatry, LLC in Hamden where he works primarily with elders and their families.

USNH COMMITTEES

The USNH Standing Committees are:

Buildings and Grounds

Responsible for maintaining USNH properties, and for bidding and contracting for maintenance, improvements and repairs.

Communications

Improving the quality, timeliness, and organization of information broadcast to our membership and the community at large, including news stories and advertising in New Haven area newspapers.

Finance

Oversees the financial operation of USNH, prepares the annual budget, and directs the Annual Giving Campaign each spring.

Membership

Introduces new members to USNH and provides them with support and information

Ministry

Meets regularly with the minister, discussing issues of mutual importance to the minister and USNH.

Music

Supports the music director and music program, and serves as a sounding board for the music makers and the congregation.

Nomination

Charged with creating a slate of Board members and officers on which the congregation votes at the Annual Meeting.

Personnel

Recommends salaries and benefits to the Board; develops staff accountability procedures; makes staff policy recommendations to the board.

Religious Education

Sets and helps implement the policies for the youth and adult R.E. programs.

Social Activities

Plans and conducts a variety of social activities for USNH members.

Social Responsibility

Sub-committees include: Anti-Racism, Poverty and Economic Justice, and Waverly/USNH Partnership.

Unitarian Universalist Affairs

Keeps USNH informed about UU activities on the local, regional and continental levels and stimulates member participation in these activities.

Worship

Plans the Sunday morning and other services in cooperation with the ministers and director of music.

The USNH ad hoc committees are:

Aesthetics

Oversees and enhances the aesthetic environment of USNH.

Capital Expenditure

Responsible for controlling the expenditures involved in implementing expansion plans approved by the congregation in June 2000; channels communication among the congregation, trustees, architects and contractors

Caring

Offers to help meet temporary needs of USNH members; offers meals to the incapacitated; arranges transportation to medical appointments, USNH, etc.; visits and corresponds with the hospitalized.

Endowment

Improves USNH's long-term financial status by increasing endowments and other special purposes donations.

History and Archives

Preserves the history and significant documents of USNH through cataloging items and personal interviews with founding members.

Hospitality

Duties include supervision of after-service coffee, arranging of meals or receptions for specific events and stocking the kitchen.

Memorials

Provides a planned way to memorialize deceased UNSH members; maintains a written record of memorial gifts and a list of needs for future memorial donations.

Ministerial Internship

Offers support to any Intern Minister and serves as a line of communication between the intern and the congregation.

Teaching Parish Committee

Meets with the Youth Leadership Intern to offer support, discuss issues and serve as a line of communication with the congregation.

USNH ORGANIZATIONS

Small Groups Ministry

Small Groups Ministry is a structure of small groups formed within the congregation to strengthen our sense of community, enhance the bonds of connection and assist us in deepending our sprititual lives.

Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation Team

This USNH group was trained by the Faith in Action Department of the UUA to work with congregational leaders to develop anti-racist multicultural identity and practice. Two interesting web sites about this issue are antiracist-uu@uua.org and www.hevanet.com/joeyl/druumm.html.

Lay Ministry Team

The 11 Lay Ministers are members of the congregation who have completed an 8 session training program and have agreed to serve on the team for at least two years. They meet monthly with the minister and offer caring support to people in the congregation in crisis situations and visit and keep in touch with others for extended periods. They visit patients in hospitals and nursing care facilities and people at home who are unable to attend Sunday services, reaching out to keep caring connections ongoing in the USNH community. They are commissioned by the minister and the congregation.
