If Your Child is Missing

Children as young as Four and Five can be taught these serious and useful tips WITHOUT being scared!

Remember: Knowledge is POWER!

Who is a Stranger?

Unfortunately most children think they can tell by looking at someone if they are safe or not.

Most people think a stranger is someone they have never seen before. Teach your children that a stranger is someone that they do not know well. For instance, someone that they see everyday on the street corner or in the hallway at school is not someone they know well.

In some families they use a "code word". Something that only you and your children know.

Teach your child that if they are lost and alone what type of stranger they may turn to for help. This person would be a cashier at the counter or another mother with her children.

Teach them to look for actions rather than appearances to tell them if someone is trust worthy or not.

Teach your child to trust their instincts and to never do something or go somewhere that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Things you can do to keep your Kids Safe:

~Role Play - We can not urge this important tool enough.

~ Keep a list of emergency phone numbers your children can use.

~ Keep an up to date CHILD INFORMATION SHEET that contains all vitals.

~ Pledge to your kids that you will never abandon them; teach them that anyone who claims that you have is not telling the truth.

NEVER put your child's name on outside clothing or materials that others may see.  A potential predator may call your child by name, thus making the child believe they know them.

Teach your children to Protect themselves:

~ Make sure your children know their full name, address and phone number. Also the full name of both parents.

~ Teach your child how to dial 911 from home and a public pay phone.

~ Keep in groups

~ Teach them that it is OK to say "no" and get away from anyone who makes them feel uncomfortable.

~ Teach them how to protect them selves if they are abducted

~ Prepare them, for if they have been thrown into a trunk. Teach them that they can pull the wires of the tail lights out from the inside of the trunk.  Or kick the rear tail lights out and stick something out of the open space. Hopefully a police officer will stop the vehicle for no taillights or someone driving behind will see something sticking out, and the child can alert the officer/ person that they are in danger.

Teach your child that most newer cars have a latch inside the trunk that can be released and the seat will fold down or the trunk door  will pop open.  Look at your own car with your child and talk to them about different methods of how to "Break the Car" if they ever find themselves in an uncomfortable situation.  Showing these items can be life saving.

~ A universal sign to police officers of danger is to flash a light on and off repeatedly. If the child is trapped in a room, flashing the light switch on and off can alert someone that you are in danger.

~ If being chased by a predator, a child can crawl under a parked car and hold on to the bottom of the car for dear life. Most likely the predator will not go through the trouble to get him/ her out.

~ Yell, scream ("you are not my parent"), kick and run.

~ If put into a car of a predator, distract the driver. Wires can be pulled out from underneath the front dashboard on the driver’s side. Try to pull the keys out and throw them away. Or the brake pedal may be pushed resulting in the car behind hitting the car the child is in. Honking the horn loudly will create a scene as well.
