Please join us for the first of our series of speakers on Disability
and Human Rights. The
Speaker Series will feature the following speakers and take place at the
College of Law, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room 201 on the following
dates:
January 30th Eric Rosenthal,
Executive Director, Mental Disability Rights
Friday International
("MDRI")
Eric
Rosenthal is the founder and Executive Director of MDRI, an advocacy organization
dedicated to the international recognition and enforcement of the rights of
people with mental disabilities. Mr. Rosenthal has served as a consultant to
the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the United Nations Special
Rapporteur on Disability, and the US National Council on Disability, and is the
author of several reports and published articles on international disability
rights.
March 1st Judith
Heumann, Advisor on Disability, The World Bank
Monday Judith Heumann was appointed as
the World Bank's first Advisor on Disability and Development in July 2002.
Prior to this appointment, Ms. Heumann was an Assistant Secretary of Education
in the U.S. Department of Education during the Clinton Administration, in
charge of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. She is
also a co-founder of the World Institute on Disability.
April 1st Peter Blanck, Charles and Marion Keirscht
Professor of Law and
Thursday Public
Health at the University of Iowa, Univ. of Iowa College of Law
Professor Blanck is the Director of the Law, Health
Policy & Disability Center at the Iowa College of Law. The Center is a leader in law, technology,
education and research, focused on improving the quality of life for persons
living with disabilities. He is the author of many articles on the ADA. His
most recent co-edited book is entitled, Disability,
Civil Rights Law and Policy (2004).

This is happening at Syracuse University—do you want to be a part of it?
The Professional Development Programs of the Graduate School in association with the Beyond Compliance Coordinating Committee are accepting abstracts from students faculty and staff, for a book on Disability Pedagogy in Higher Education. The audience of the book is teaching assistants and faculty. The goal is to present ideas, both theoretical and practical, for including students with disabilities in the classroom and the disability perspective in the curriculum. Writers from all disciplines, particularly fields that do not typically address disability issues, are invited to participate.
Possible topics include:
Additional abstracts, on related topics, are also welcome.
Abstracts should be one page or less in length and submitted to Ken Sagendorf (kssagend@syr.edu) by December 1, 2003. Invitations to write papers for the publication will be sent out around December 19, 2003. Invited authors will be asked to write a 5-7 page paper for submission by February 15, 2004. Authors have the option of anonymity in the final publication.
