Stangl Pottery Cigarette Boxes and Ashtrays

Over the years, Stangl created an incredible number of different cigarette boxes. Stangl started making cigarette boxes in the mid 1920's as part of some of their early dinnerware lines. In 1942 Stangl started to make individual "cigarette sets". These sets consisted of a cigarette box and two ashtrays. As a late 1940's Stangl magazine ad states "Stangl Hand-Painted Cigarette Sets ... exquisite pottery sets to gladden the hearts of all who appreciate festive colors and hand craftmanship. The ashtrays serve as coasters or for personal accessories. On sale at leading department, gift and jewelry stores." These "cigarette sets" proved to be extremely popular. So popular that well over 100 different cigarette boxes exist today.

(Note: If you would like more detailed information on Stangl's cigarette boxes, please see Bob Sherman's article "Cigarette Boxes" from "The Stangl / Fulper Times", Volume 4, Issue 13, April 1999. Reprinted here with Bob Sherman's permission. Thanks Bob.)

Hand-Painted Cigarette Sets (Includes Yellow Tulip, Garden Flower, Mountain Laurel, Thistle, and other dinnerware line cigarette sets that were originally issued separately from their respective dinnerware lines. Note: These sets varied in style. The most common box shape (and the first box shape sold under the Stangl name) was rectangular (roughly 5 1/2" by 4 1/2" but it varies a lot) with flat sides and lid. It was shape #3630. I've called it "Original Shape" for lack of a better term. Other styles were made such as a smaller version "Lunning Shape" (Shape #3604) (roughly 4 1/2" by 3 1/2"), a scalloped sided box, a pagoda style lid box, a double box, a square  "trailer" box (Shape #3902), a ruffled edged lid box (Shape #3898), and a quilted top box. The most common ashtray / coaster was 5 inch round. Other styles made were 4 1/2" round, 5 inch rounded square, and 4 1/2" square.)
