Spongeware Type Designs

Stangl never advertised these patterns as spongeware, however that is probably the best way of descibing this group of dinnerware lines. These lines were produced by sponging one or more colors on a piece of pottery to give it a mottled or "enamelware" type of appearance. Of the earlier versions (Mediterranean, Monterey, Galaxy, and Scandinavia) only Mediterranean proved popular. The later Town and Country pattern (made to "recapture the charm and beauty of the past century with (an) authentic recreation of early enamelware") was a runaway success. After just four years it was being made in five colors (each withover 65 unique pieces.) Stangl also made a spongeware line of dinnerware for Tiffany called Caughley. It can be found listed under the "Made for Distributors" heading.
