"Stangl Pottery" Marks
A number of different Stangl pottery marks can be found on their birds. The most common mark is an oval with Stangl Pottery Birds written inside. It can be found in 3 colors (black, brown, and blue). Other fairly common marks are a brown oval with Stangl written inside, the plain word "Stangl" written in either blue or brown, and the plain word "Stangl" or "Stangl U.S.A." molded into the bottom. Less common marks include the early dinnerware mark (a rectangle with a vase inside), the word "Fulper" either pressed in or molded in, and the words "Stangl Pottery" handwritten across the bottom. The gold decorated birds can sometimes be found with a gold oval with "Stangl" written inside. Overall one of the rarest marks of all is the oval "Audobon Birds" mark. In addition to some form of a stangl pottery mark, most birds will have the model number written on the bottom. It can be found 3 ways, either stamped in blue, brown, or black, molded into the bottom or incised into the bottom. Finally it is common to have the painter's initials (or mark) appear on the bottom.

One of the rarest of all the marks. Stangl made very few porcelain birds. They were extremely expensive. This mark (3742) belongs to the Double Robins.

An inscribed model number. In this case it is 3402D (Double Orioles). In many cases these are quite hard to read.

Hang Tags
Originally the birds came with oval hang tags. On one side was written "Stangl Pottery" or "A Stangl Creation". On the other side would be the model number, the name of the bird, and either "Fulper Pottery Co." or "Stangl Pottery" and finally Trenton N.J. These hang tags are hard to find now.

An original hang tag. The front of the tag typically reads "Stangl Pottery" or "A Stangl Creation".

Unfortunately this tag has been trimmed, however it still shows what was on the back of the hang tag. In this case "3812 Chestnut Warbler made by Stangl Pottery Trenton N.J." On some of the earlier tags the back will read "made by Fulper Pottery Co. Trenton N.J.". Even if the back says Fulper, the front will still say Stangl. |
