I am building a 1/96 scale plastic model of a Spanish galleon. Can someone tell me how I can mark the waterline on the hull so that I can paint it?

Once the hull is completed, make sure that the sheer is fair and equal on both sides.

Before the deck is cluttered up, mark the waterline at bow and stern, and then place the model up-side-down on a flat surface (e.g., table). The two waterline marks will likely be at different heights (probably higher at the bow).

Take a pencil and a scrap block of wood of thickness such that the pencil point is at or slightly higher than the highest waterline mark.

Note that the sheer forms a wedge-shaped gap between the hull and the surface at each end. Shim up the bow and stern with strips of wood, so that the pencil point is on the waterline mark at bow and stern. As long as the strip is perpendicular to the centerline, the hull will be level on both sides; sliding the strip along the sheer gap will wedge the hull up or down as needed.

A hull supported by shims to draw the waterline

Once the hull is positioned, it's only necessary to slide the block around the hull on the surface, drawing a (water) line parallel to the surface.
