Get a big gym sock or similar high topped sock. Insert a thin liner sock or
the lower end of a sound (no runs) women's nylon stocking. Fill the liner
sock with dry rice. Leave some space unfilled - how much is up to you -
experiment!. Tie a knot in the top of the liner sock to keep the rice
inside. Tie a knot in the top of the gym sock. Roll the filled rice sock
around on your work table to 'adjust' the rice filling. Press down to form
a supporting groove in the rice sock to hold your model. Use a sleeve
removed from an old flannel shirt, or a leg removed from old flannel
pajamas, as a removable and washable soft cover.
low cost; adjustable size and firmness; will hold model on keel, side, or
upside down; washable and replaceable cover and outer container; make from
materials already in your house; no wood working, metal machining, or even
sewing skills required. You can even cook and eat the rice if things get
really tough.
