Here's what I've done in the past (for reef points that actually pierce the sail)...

Take the reefing line; soak it in water, and hang it up to dry with a weight on one end - that will straighten it out.

Then paint it with either "acrylic matte medium" (from the artist supply store, such as Michael's®), OR with diluted white glue. While still wet, wrap a coil of this line around a kitchen knife at least as wide as you want the reef points to be long.

When dry, there is a good fold formed into the line where it crosses the knife's cutting edge; then just cut the coil into reef points, and thread each one through the sail.
