Cherry

David Stevens

This wood grows through out the Eastern part of North America from Nova Scotia to Texas. Most all supply is now limited to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia due to extensive cutting. Although supplies are not as plentiful as in the past, cherry is available at an ever increasing price on the American lumber market. In ship modeling Cherry makes an excellent structural wood. i have 18 year old models framed in cherry which show no signs of distortion, warpage, or shrinkage. All the joinery is as tight as the day it was done. cherry has great working qualities from sawing, sanding and finishes to a smooth surface. It is said if the wood it treated with lime juice and oiled it takes on a darker even Mahogany color. This is known as New England Mahogany.
