What's New?

  • 25. February 2009
    • Translated the documents proposing the conferal of the German Cross in Gold to SS-Hauptsturmführer d. R. Siegfried Gröschel and SS-Obersturmführer d. R. Walter Hölzl. Both men served in the I./SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt.26 "HJ" under SS-Ostubaf. Bernhard Krause. Gröschel as a Kompaniechef and Hölzl as Adjutant. The proposals were written up by Mohnke.
    • Added the biography of SS-Sturmbannführer Siegfried Müller. As the first Kommandeur of the Division's Pionier-Bataillon, Müller was responsible for forming, raising, training and leading the Bataillon into its first combat engagements at the Normandy front. Müller, one of only two soldiers in the entire Division to have received both the Honor Roll Clasp and the Knight's Cross, was the final Kommandeur of SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt.25 "HJ".
    • Spelling, grammar and general editing done to the text on this page.

  • 25. January 2009
    • Minor cosmetic changes made to the Links page. Broken links removed, navigation box added, layout modified and the code has been updated so that it better conforms to the rest of the site.
    • Minor cosmetic changes made to the Persona page. Layout modified, navigation box added and corrections made.
    • The "navigation box" is taken directly from Jason Pipes' webpage. To my knowledge, he developed the code. I liked the look and logic behind it so much that I decided to "borrow" it.
    • And finally, the change that is most generally interesting to visitors. A Führerstellenbesetzung for SS-Pionierbataillon 12 "Hitlerjugend". Clearly it is incomplete, contains errors and is written in laughingly bad German. With that said this is probably the best there is until Patrick Agte finally publishes something.

  • 29. December 2008
    • Added award and promotion dates for two of the soldiers that were awarded the German Cross in Gold while in service with Aufklärungsabteilung 12: SS-Hauptscharführer Kurt Sturm and SS-Untersturmführer d.R. Sepp Mahl.
    • Added award and promotion dates for SS-Hauptscharführer Georg Mack. Mack served as a Zugführer in the highly decorated 1./SS-Panzerjägerabteilung 12.
    • Cosmetic changes made to the biography format.

  • 15. December 2008
    • Added new pages, awards and promotion dates for SS-Hauptsturmführer Günther Wöst and SS-Obersturmführer d.R. Hans Wachter. Both men were German Cross in Gold winners with the Leibstandarte Panzerjägerabteilung, which formed the cadre of SS-Panzerjägerabteiluing 12.
    • Added the biography and photographs of SS-Oberscharführer Rudolf Roy. Roy was decorated with the Knight's Cross for destroying 36 enemy tanks. He was killed in action in the Ardennes forest on the 17th of December 1944.

  • 20. February 2004
    • Added award and promotion dates for SS-Sturmbannführer Jakob Hanreich and SS-Hauptsturmführer Karl-Heinz Brockschmidt. Hanreich was the first Kommandeur of SS-Pz.Jgr.Abt.12. He was captured during the breakout from the Falaise pocket in Normandy. Brockschmidt was the final Kommandeur of SS-Pz.Jgr.Abt.12. This holder of the German Cross in Gold came to the Division from the Heer in November 1944.
    • Added the biography of SS-Unterscharführer Fritz Eckstein. Eckstein was one of only two soldiers in the entire Waffen-SS to be decorated with the Knight's Cross as a tank gunner. Eckstein served in the 1.Kompanie of the Division's Pz.Jgr.Abt. as the Richtschütze in the Panzer commanded by SS-Oberscharführer Rudolf Roy. Later Eckstein commanded his own vehicle. He survived the war and died at the relatively young age of 56 in 1979.

  • 1. February 2004
    • Added promotion and award dates for SS-Obersturmbannführer Fritz Schröder, Kdr. of SS-Pz.Art.Rgt. 12. Schröder came over to the Division with the cadre of Leibstandarte Officers in the summer of 1943. He served with the Leibstandarte Artillerie troop as a Gun commander, Batterie-Führer and Abteilung-Führer. He was already nominated for the German Cross in Gold during 1943 when he took command of the newly raised Hitlerjugend Artillerie-Regiment. Schröder led the Regiment during its formation and then in Normandy. He was transferred out of the Division on the recommendation of Kurt Meyer.
    • Added promotion and award dates for SS-Obersturmbannführer Karl-Heinz Milius, Kdr. of SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt. 25. Milius was shot and severely wounded during the Campaign in France as a Company Commander. After his convalescence Milius served as the Kdr. of SS-U.S. Lauenburg. He came over to the HJ Division in the summer of 1943 as the Kdr. of III./SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt. 25. When Kurt Meyer took command of the Division on 14. June 1944, Milius assumed command of the Regiment. He was transferred out after the Normandy Campaign on the recommendation of Fritz Kraemer.
    • Minor cosmetic changes and corrections made throughout the site.

  • 23. January 2004
    • Added award and promotion dates for German Cross in Gold holder Kurt Mühlhaus, Zugführer in 6./SS-Pz.Rgt. 12, and Knight's Cross holder Richard Rudolf, Zugführer in 9./SS-Pz.Rgt. 12.
    • Added two new photo's to the photo gallery. The first photo is a well known picture of Erich Urbanitz, Karl-Heinz Prinz and Karl Bartling at the Ardenne Abbey, June 1944. The other is a rather rare photo of SS-Untersturmführer Kurt Bogensperger and his crew after he was awarded the Iron Cross first class on 24.7.1944.
    • I'm about three years behind the eightball and there's much updating to do. The main page received a small revamping. The defunct forum link was removed, in its place is a new section, currently unavailable, for interviews. The Links page has been updated. Dead links have been removed, old links updated and two new links have been added.

  • 12. January 2004
    • Sticking with the Panzer-Regiment theme, I've added new information to the page dedicated to SS-Unterscharführer Horst-Willi Parakenings. Parakenings served as a Panzer-Kommandant in 1./SS-Pz.Rgt. 12. He was recommended for the Knight's Cross in September 1944 by his Abteilung Kdr., Arno Jürgensen, but the proposal was rejected and changed to the Honor Roll Clasp.

  • 4. January 2004
    • Added award and promotion dates for SS-Obersturmbannführer Martin Gross and SS-Sturmbannführer Hans Taubert. Gross was decorated with the Knight's Cross as commander of II./SS-Pz.Rgt. 1 LAH , and was the last commander of the Hitlerjugend Panzer-Regiment. Hans Taubert was nominated for the German Cross in Gold in 1943 but the proposal was rejected. He was the final commander of SS-Pi.Btl. 12.
    • Added award and promotion dates for SS-Standartenoberjunker Ulli Ahrens and SS-Untersturmführer Heinz Lehmann. Both men were decorated with the German Cross in Gold as Zugführern within I./SS-Pz.Rgt. 12. Neither lived to receive the award. Both Ahrens and Lehmann were killed in action in August 1944.

  • 3. November 2003
    • It's been a very long time. I am now able to resume updating and maintaining the webpage. Allot has changed since I became sick towards the beginning of 2001. I have a number of updates planned over the next few months, including one dedicated to the memory of Mr. Hans Siegel - pictures, bio and an interview. Mr. Siegel did much to support my research, and his presence is deeply missed following his death in April of last year. Mr Georg Hurdelbrink passed away on the 26th of August 2002 after a long illness. A deep personal loss to me was the death of Mr. Willy Hund. Mr. Hund served with SS-Div. Nordland, and was the only soldier of that Division to be decorated with both the Knight's Cross and Honor Roll Clasp. Mr. Hund is resting peacefully, ich bin sicher.
    • I've added a new photo and started the biography of SS-Sturmbannführer Siegfried Müller. Müller was in Demyansk with the Pi.Btl. of the SS-T.Div. as a Kp.-Chef, and in this position was decorated with the German Cross in Gold. He assumed command of the Pi.Btl. of the SS-Pz.Div. HJ upon it's formation, and in this post was decorated with the Honor Roll Clasp. After the battles in Normandy, Müller took command of the SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt. 25 of the SS-Pz.Div. "HJ" and in this post was decorated with the Knight's Cross. SS-Sturmbannführer Johannes Taubert took command of the Pi.Btl. after Müller, and I've added a new picture of him, as well as which awards he received.
    • I've added a very detailed casualty listing for III.(gep.)/SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt 26 during the months of June and July. I'll be adding more of these (and more Kompanie-liste) as time permits. These casualty lists include first and last name, rank, date of birth plus when, where and how the soldier became a casualty. These lists will be accessible from the History Page
    • A search function has been added for the three separate Kompanie liste found on the site. 3./SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt 25, 10./SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt 25 and 3./SS-Pz.Pi.Btl 12.

  • 1. January 2000
    • The tedious and unenviable task of adding company lists has been completed! (well, for now at least). These lists can be accessed via the Organization Page. At this point there are only three online but more will be added as time permits. As always, I welcome suggestions and corrections. At times I felt these lists might be somewhat redundant, but the benefit is threefold, I think.
    • 1) The size and structure of a company is now a little clearer.
    • 2) For the few that have contacted me inquiring about family members, perhaps you can find your fathers, grandfathers or uncles name in these lists. Eventually a search feature will be added, one that will allow you to search by name or date of birth. And finally
    • 3) I think that the "lowly" SS-Mann deserves just as much, if not more, consideration in a project of this nature than all the high award winners. Very often these awards reflect the achievements of the common Grenadier under their command.

  • 5. December 1999

This will eventually be done, but in the meantime I have posted one of Jürgensen's evaluations (done by Rgt.Kdr Max Wünsche) and his complete RK Vorschlag. Both are in the original German.
    • As with Jürgensen, I have posted the complete and original RK and DKiG Vorschlagen for Bernahrd "Pappa" Krause. In English there is a 1938 evaluation. To my German fluent vistors: ENJOY!
