Gerhard Hein was born on 9 July 1916 in Klein-Paniov. He was awarded the Knights Cross on 9 March 1940 while in command of a Zug in the 10 Kompanie/Infaterie Regiment 220. On 9 June 1942 he became the 120th soldier to be awarded the Oak Leaves as the Kp.Fhr. of the 5. Kompanie/Infanterie Regiment 209 (58. Heer Division) in Demyansk.
