The origins of the Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler can be traced back to 17. March 1933, when upon the order of Adolf Hitler 117 men of the Allgemeine-SS were hand picked by Sepp Dietrich to form the chancellery guard, the so called SS-Stabwache Berlin. Yet Berlin was not to be the only city with special detachments of armed SS soldiers. Hamburg, Dresden and Munich among others, received small garrisons as well. The SS-Sonderkommandos, as these garrisons were called, were used for police and other internal duties. The Sonderkommandos were the basis of the SS-Verfügungstruppe, which in turn was the foundation of the Waffen-SS.
