Services
SCSB is a corporation whose primary function is
to collect, freeze, store, ship and inseminate dog semen utilizing techniques
derived from those first reported by Dr. Seager. These are the techniques that resulted in the
first live litter whelped from the use of frozen semen.
Dr. Seager reported the first live births from
frozen canine semen in 1969. To date
over 2000 puppies have been born using
this method. Semen stored for over 23
years has resulted in live, healthy
puppies. Pregnancies have
resulted from semen shipped to many parts of the
Special arrangements may be made to have our
laboratory collect in your area eliminating the risk and expense of shipping
valuable studs.
More than one insemination can usually be
obtained per collection depending on the age of the donor dog and the quality
and quantity of the semen. Semen is
stored in liquid nitrogen (-325oF)
and storage is thus not affected by power failure.
Optimum semen
specimens are usually obtained from an animal in his breeding prime.
Carol Schubert, who
learned semen freezing techniques at Texas A & M Univeristy, has been our laboratory director for 15
years. She is a former professional
handler and has over 35 years experience as a breeder and exhibitor.
DNA Samples
AKC requires that cheek swab DNA samples be
obtained by the collector and submitted to AKC with notification of collection.
DNA samaples will be taken here at no cost to
the client. A check in the amount of $40
payable to AKC is required to be sent with the sample.
Process
Immediately after each collection a complete semen
evaluation is done and the amount of extender to be used is calculated. The extender plays a crucial role in
successful semen freezing. It maintains
the semen with a specific essential pH range and supplies needed energy and
cryo protection of the sperm cell membrane during the freezing and thawing
process. The semen extension takes place
at specific temperatures and periods of time.
The semen is then frozen in pellet form on solid
carbon dioxide and then transferred to and stored in liquid nitrogen. Before storage, an aliquot of frozen semen is
thawed and checked microscopically for motility and morphology.
Advantages
Frozen semen can -
-
Eliminate the cost, danger and time consuming effort of shipping
bitches.
- Give
the possibility of breeding to outstanding sires who have long been deceased.
-
Relieve stud owners from the responsibly of having someone else’s
“in heat bitch”
in
their care.
- Avoid
the interruption of the stud’s show or field career.
- Prevent
the loss of the stud’s genetic material if the dog is prematurely lost.
- Allow
the breeders from distant places to use the dog.
- Reduce
the number of stud dogs kept by keeping frozen semen instead.
Documents Needed
- to be presented at time of collection.
1. Copy of
registration certificate.
2.
Updated health certificate.
3.
Brucellosis certificate.
4. DNA
Profile Certificate
Breeding Management can be done from a
distance. One of the main reasons for failure
to conceive from the use of frozen semen is poor timing. We can pick your insemination date from here
at our bank. Serum can be sent to the
endocrine lab for a quantitative assay (in house tests are not
recommended). Using the assay results,
we select yoru optimum breeding date and provide you with a detailed
progesterone evauluation chart. Call for
informaiton.
Special Notes
Information on the use of frozen semen will be
furnished to the client and written instructions on thawing and insemination
will be furnished to the inseminating veterinarian upon request. We are also available for phone consultation.
SCSB is not a party to contractual obligations
between an owner of semen and any purchaser of semen. Shipments are made only upon written
authorization by the semen owner.
The owner should read and be familiar with
regulations applying to registration of litters produced by artificial
insemination using frozen semen for the registering body of their breed. (AKC regulations - Form R1989-1)
