ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION

FROZEN SEMEN

Process

Immediately after collection a complete semen evaluation is done and amount of extender to be used is calculated. The extender plays a crucial role in successful semen freezing. It maintains the semen within a specific essential pH range and supplies needed energy and cryo protection of the sperm cell membrane during the freezing and thawing processes. Semen extension takes place at specific temperatures and periods of time. The semen is then frozen in pellet form on solid carbon dioxide and then transferred to and stored in liquid nitrogen. An aliquot of frozen semen is thawed and checked microscopically for motility and morphology before storage.

Documents Needed

Storage

After the test thaw the pellets are placed in small vials. The owner's name, dog's name, AKC number and breed are written on the vial. The date, collection number and number of breeding units are also written on the vial. The vial is then placed in a large liquid nitrogen tank. There is no electricity involved so outages are not a problem. Long term storage will be maintained by Brownsville/Lomira Small Animal Clinic in Lomira Wi.unless other arrangements have been made for long term storage. Web: www.smallanimalclinic.com .

Boarding

Special arrangements can be made at either of two boarding kennels in the area at modest rates. Dogs will be transported to and from the bank for collection by boarding kennel personnel.

Shipment

Shipments are made upon written request from the owner on a Semen Release form. The frozen semen is shipped in special shipping tanks made for this purpose.

The tanks are generally shipped by Federal Express standard overnight. The empty tanks are then returned to the bank via Federal Express.
