The High Sierra

Young Lakes                      (Click on any picture for an enlarged view.)

"Well-worn" doesn't quite capture the sight of this eighteen-inch wide, nine-inch deep trail that we followed for miles through open country and into the woods. The hike to Young Lakes was an exhausting 6.3 miles, mostly uphill.

We stopped for lunch in the middle of this meadow with no name that appeared suddenly in the middle of the forest. Since four out of six of our group were named Smith, I named it Smith Meadow, naturally.

Our campsite at 10,000 feet was very near the treeline. That means no firewood and no campfires, so Dan prepares his dinner over a butane stove. The lowest of the Young Lakes lies just beyond the trees. As would be expected, middle and upper Young Lakes were higher up.

Tim refills water bottles in a shallow stream that flowed from the lower Young Lakes.

Towering above the lake was this ragged peak appropriately named Ragged Peak.

Descending from Young Lakes, we caught this view of  Tuolumne Meadows and the Cathedral Range from a clearing in the forest.
