Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was a Russian-born novelist and philosopher who emigrated to the United States at the age of 21. She worked for a few years in Hollywood editing and re-writing screenplays, then went on to write her own novels, including the two best-sellers The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. She later defined a revolutionary philosophy she called Objectivism, which upholds reason, individualism, egoism and laissez-faire capitalism.

In 1999, the United States Postal Service honored Ayn Rand with a commemorative stamp (right) as part of their American Literary Arts series.
