135. Lithuania Grodno Overprint
Unknown 134     Back to UPO Home     Unknown 136
This is a local overprint from Grodno, Lithuania. The overprint is as shown in Scott, however, for the same stamps listed in Michel, the overprint is shown with two horizontal lines. What is the source of the difference?
This is correctly identified as Grodno (Gardinas) Postmaster Issue of March 4, 1919. Genuinely overprinted, this is an extremely difficult stamp. There were 500 each of 8 different values overprinted with a revaluing to 50sk. These are listed in "The Postage Stamps of Lithuania" from the Lithuanian Philatelic Societies of New York and Toronto. All illustrations in the handbook contain the mentioned lines but it is emphasized that printing variations as well as counterfeits exist. [Jim Simon]
Grodno is now in Belarus, of course. [Ian Billings]
