A curious fantasy, seen on eBay. I know where Montmartre is (my favorite part of Paris), but what is the significance of the obliterated denomination? I note in Bourdi that later issues seem to have no denomination; is there a story there?
According to Harry Rooke this set of 4 labels was prepared around 1923 by Girard & Bunino of Paris to publicise an exhibition of paintings. They first appeared with the four se-tenant designs having values of 5c, 10c, 15c & 25c. They came in various colors and then with values blacked out. A second issue appeared with the values removed. I bought a sheet of these at the Paris bourse two years ago. They were a lot larger then I expected and as I recall there were two or four sets on a page with very large spacing in between. Unfortunately they were stolen in Rome. Beware the Train station in Rome! [Ed Pieklo]
