Can these local Hitler obliterations from Austria be identified as to source town?
All Austrian obliterations are from Vienna. I have a book at home that illustrate the characteristic obliterations of each post office. I'll see if I can identify yours when I get some time (and find the book). There are also lots of privately made obliterations, but these look like the real thing. [Jay Carrigan]
My source is a faded photocopy of "The First Official Issue of Postage Stamps of the Second Austrian Republic" by Robert Zehenthofer (English translation from a German publication by F. F. Meyer and K. Tranmer), published by the Austrian Stamp Club of Great Britain. The one on the left is Wien 107 (note the '07' in the cancel). This is one of 5 types used at this office. No. 256 in the above reference. I would describe the other one as an irregular circle about 15(?) mm in diameter. This is a bit harder to identify without a clue from the cancel. My guess would be Wien 62. By the way, I was wrong about these always being from Vienna. There are 12 known from other nearby towns. [Jay Carrigan]
