65 EXT. BERCHTESGADEN - DAY 65
All that is visible are the caps of the Bavarian Alps. A
bowling pin sails into the frame, twisting in perfect
circles. It falls back out of sight. A second one comes
into view and falls out as well.
We move down to reveal EVA BRAUN, a trim, muscular and apple
cheeked pretty blond. She is executing a series of gymnastic
moves while juggling bowling pins.
EVA finishes her routine and bows. Hitler, seated with his
back to us, APPLAUDS. Behind Hitler is Unity, age 33,
sitting in her hospital bed on the terrace of Berchtesgaden.
She does not look happy.
A bell RINGS. It is the type attached to a shop door. Unity
looks toward the source of the sound.
CUT TO:
66 INT. HOFFMAN'S PHOTO SHOP - A FEW DAYS LATER 66
Jane and Unity enter the shop. It is a small but decidedly
upscale camera store. Several impressive box cameras are
displayed on the floor as well as in glass cases stretching
to the ceiling. Seven or eight customers are looking at
various items.
Opposite the door is a long counter behind which stands Eva.
She is dancing, one hand over her head, and humming. She is
also glancing down at a magazine on the counter. It is
apparent that she is trying to mimic something on the page.
Unity, clearly instigating, pushes Jane to the counter.
Walking around the rim of the shop, Unity pretends to be
looking at cameras but her real attention is on Eva and Jane.
EVA
(to Jane)
Good day, Fraulein.
JANE
Hello.
Jane looks back to Unity who turns away.
EVA
Can I help you?
JANE
Yes...a roll of film, please.
EVA
What kind of film?
Jane looks back to Unity. Unity uses a hand gesture to say
"movie film."
JANE
Movie film?
EVA
16mm or 8mm? We have black and white and
some of the new Kodachrome color in both.
JANE
Just a minute.
Jane goes to Unity. The two of them have a QUIET ARGUMENT.
Eva watches this.
Jane comes back, now with Unity in tow.
JANE (cont'd)
I would like two double rolls of the 8mm
Kodachrome, please.
Eva turns around and rummages through the film selection.
Unity looks down at the magazine. She turns it around for a
better look.
A fan photo of Lillian Harvey. She is in the dance position
which Eva was mimicking. The headline reads, "Der Grosse
Filmschauspieler Lillian Harvey in "Der Kongress Tanzen"
("The great film star Lillian Harvey 'Congress Dances.'")
Jane and Unity look at each other and Unity rolls her eyes.
Eva turns around with the film.
EVA
Twelve marks, five, please.
Somehow the idea of actually paying for something doesn't
seem to have come up in the plans. Jane looks to Unity with
some alarm. Unity, exasperated, reaches into her purse and
finds some money.
Eva takes the money and returns some change.
EVA (cont'd)
(to Jane)
Thank you. Good day.
JANE
Good day.
Unity and Jane turn and head for the door.
EVA
Good day to you, too, Fraulein Mitford.
Shocked and not a little bit angered, Unity turns to Eva.
She advances and it is clear that she is on the verge of a
blow up. She speaks loudly and "triumphantly" enough for the
whole shop to hear her.
UNITY
Lillian Harvey is a clumsy cow!
"Victorious," Unity turns and stomps out of the shop. The
customers seem more than a little confused by this outburst.
Eva smiles.
CUT TO:
67 EXT. SCHWANENWERDER - A FEW DAYS LATER 67
This plays SILENT/SLOW MOTION. Unity playing with the eight
Goebbels children in a field of flowers. She pretends to
shoot them. They all "drop dead" with overly dramatic play
gestures. Unity applauds.
CUT TO:
68 EXT. PORCH OF SCHWANENWERDER - LATER THAT SAME DAY 68
Schwanenwerder is the Goebbels' island home. The porch is a
long stone patio overlooking the lake at Wannsee and the
mountains beyond. Behind it, the large chalet of the
Goebbels.
There is an afternoon get-together in full swing. Seated
around a table are Janos and Marie, Putzi, Josef Goebbels and
his wife, MAGDA. Magda is elegant yet quite warm and
approachable. Also present is JOACHIM VON RIBBENTROP.
Ribbentrop is short but well-enough proportioned so that one
would not notice it. He affects an air of learning and
culture although possesses little beyond the pretense of
these things. A few other Party functionaries round out the
group.
Unity is off in the corner with the Goebbels children. They
are all wearing the various invented costumes of mythic
characters - a dragon, a knight, a damsel, etc.. Unity is
helping them to apply make-up.
GOEBBELS (TO THE GROUP)
I hope the wine is to your liking.
GENERAL AGREEMENT on the quality of the wine.
PUTZI
What say you, Ribbentrop? The wine up to
your usual exacting standards?
VON RIBBENTROP
Piquant, I'd say, with just a soupcon of
blush.
PUTZI
As much as a soupcon?! I'd say only an
intimation. Maybe even a hint!
The group LAUGHS. Von Ribbentrop is clearly angered by the
sarcasm. Before he has a chance to respond to the snickering
Putzi, Goebbels rises for a toast.
GOEBBELS
Gentlemen...and ladies, to victory in the
east.
ALL
Victory.
They drink. Putzi calls for another toast.
PUTZI
To victory in the House of Lords...first.
ALL
Victory.
Putzi gives a smirking glance to von Ribbentrop who realizes
that he has just been insulted. He puts down his glass.
VON RIBBENTROP
I must make my leave.
GOEBBELS
You're not waiting for the Fuhrer?
VON RIBBENTROP
I must be about his business. He will
understand. Magda.
He kisses her hand.
MAGDA
I'll show you out.
Von Ribbentrop CLICKS HIS HEELS to the rest of the group and
he and Magda exit.
GOEBBELS
Putzi, you must try to be more subtle in
your prejudices.
PUTZI
The man is a fool, Josef.
GOEBBELS
Yes, but he is our fool.
PUTZI
The eyes of the world will see...
GOEBBELS
...what I put in front of them. More
cognac?
Magda enters from the house and crosses to Unity and the
children. Unity is painting a hideous face on one of the
younger boys. One of the older boys, JOSEF, JR. is filming
the action with Unity's movie camera.
MAGDA
How is it going?
Two of the children run to Magda and wrap themselves around
her legs.
UNITY
Almost done. Show your mother how scary
you are.
Unity turns the child so that Magda can see his make-up.
Magda clutches her heart as though the sight will kill her
from fright.
MAGDA
Oh! You'll scare me to death!
Delighted, the boy runs around SCREAMING.
BOY
I almost killed Mama! I almost killed
mama!
MAGDA
All right, everybody in the house. You
need to get ready for the Fuhrer. Hurry
now!
The children all run SCREAMING into the house. Before
running off, Josef, Jr. hands Unity the camera.
Magda sits down next to Unity. Both seem tired but happy.
MAGDA
The children love you.
UNITY
They're quite, quite wonderful, you know.
MAGDA
I know, but sometimes...
Magda makes a mock strangling gesture and both LAUGH.
MAGDA (cont'd)
What about you? Where are your children?
Unity smiles and shrugs. She looks to the table.
The men are involved in conversation.
UNITY
Boys!
The men look to her. She begins filming them. They make
faces and wave. Unity puts down the camera.
UNITY
What do you think of Eva Braun?
MAGDA
She's very...common.
Both Unity and Magda LAUGH.
MAGDA
The Fuhrer is a man. He enjoys the
presence of beautiful women.
UNITY
Eva Braun isn't beautiful. I don't even
think she's very pretty.
MAGDA
But she is athletic. And she is a true
Aryan. She is a woman for his future.
UNITY
I don't see...
MAGDA
Mein kleine liebchen, he enjoys you and
you must be happy with that. If you can,
you will be the luckiest girl on earth.
UNITY
Luckiest?
MAGDA
He will never love what he fully
possesses.
UNITY
But I can offer him more than that cow.
MAGDA
What can you offer him that he cannot get
for himself?
UNITY
England.
MAGDA
Such a pretty girl. Let me take your
picture.
Magda takes the camera from Unity.
MAGDA'S POV
Through the camera. Unity draws up her knees and sits.
ALL (O.C.)
Heil Hitler!
Unity breaks into a big smile.
UNITY
Mein Fuhrer!
She gets up and runs. Magda follows the action with the
camera. Hitler is coming out of the back door with a few
black suited SS men behind him. As Unity reaches him, she
stops and salutes. He touches her face and she GIGGLES like
a little girl.
Magda puts down the camera and watches with some sympathy.
CUT TO:
69 INT. LIVING ROOM, SCHWANENWERDER - LATER THAT EVENING 69
There is a huge fireplace dominating the room and the
children are using this as a proscenium arch for their
theatre. The adults are all seated around this. Hitler is
in the center on a large, comfortable straight-backed chair.
Unity is seated on the floor at his feet.
The children are enacting a Teutonic myth of their own
creation. Josef, Jr. is playing the role of a knight errant
while another plays the dragon and a third the damsel in
distress. The others play assorted townspeople CHEERING on
the "battle."
JOSEF, JR.
No dragon can invade my town and destroy
the heart of my beautiful Heidi!
The "dragon" ROARS and the "damsel" SCREAMS. Josef, Jr.
charges at the dragon. He gives a few mock thrusts and
whacks and the dragon falls dead. The audience OOHS and AAHS
and CHEERS. Josef, Jr. raises his sword to the audience.
JOSEF, JR.
No danger is truly passed until we have
eaten the dragon!
He pretends to plunge his sword into the dragon and pulls
from its belly a red scarf. He throws this to one of the
children dressed as a dog who pretends to eat it. Josef, Jr.
reaches into a pocket of the dragon and pulls out some candy.
He throws some to the children and the rest to the audience.
All CHEER. The children run off stage and kiss and hug the
members of the audience.
HITLER
Most wonderful! Have fun, children, and
learn from your play.
(rises)
Wonderful children!
All APPLAUD. Goebbels bows to Hitler while Magda curtsies.
MAGDA
Thank you, mein Fuhrer. Children? Thank
your Fuhrer.
CHILDREN
Thank you, mein Fuhrer!
MAGDA
Now, off to bed!
The children run out of the room. The group begins to ease
into conversation mode. Hitler reaches down and takes
Unity's hand and helps her up. He walks over to speak with
Goebbels. Putzi saunters over to Unity.
PUTZI
How goes the campaign, my dear? Things
heating up on the western front?
UNITY
I don't know what you're talking about.
She begins to walk away but Putzi cuts her off.
PUTZI
This evening, when you and the Fuhrer
take your nightly walk, I would
appreciate it if you could...
UNITY
Putzi, darling, please. Our time is his
relaxation. We only talk about things of
interest to the two of us.
PUTZI
Such as?
UNITY
Such as things of interest to the two of
us. He's signaling me. Ta.
She exits. Putzi watches her go and drains his drink.
CUT TO:
70 EXT. WOODED AREA OF SCHWANENWERDER - A SHORT WHILE LATER 70
Hitler and Unity are walking through the woods. They are arm
in arm.
HITLER
My belief is in the Aryan race as an
ideal. The Nordic supreme.
UNITY
I suppose. You've never been to England,
have you?
HITLER
No. I do not speak enough English. I
still need some for diplomacy's sake.
UNITY
It's a simple enough language. German is
so much rougher. English is gentle, more
controllable.
HITLER
The verbs give me great difficulty.
UNITY
It's all a matter of conjugating. Repeat
after me: He came...he has come...he
will come.
HITLER
He came...he has come...he will come.
UNITY
See, past, present and future.
HITLER
He came...he has come...he will come.
UNITY
Good, mein Fuhrer. Now try this one: He
saw...he sees...he has seen.
HITLER
He...
UNITY
He saw...he sees...he has seen.
HITLER
He saw...he sees...he has seen.
Hitler smiles. Unity pinches his arm.
UNITY
Very good. Let's try another: He
conquered...he conquers...he will
conquer.
Hitler smiles, excited at the new game.
HITLER
He will conquers...
Unity laughs.
UNITY
No, darling. He conquered.
HITLER
He conquered.
UNITY
He conquers.
HITLER
He conquers.
UNITY
He will conquer.
HITLER
He will conquer.
UNITY
See, darling Fuhrer: All you need do is
conjugate.
71 INT. SCHWANENWERDER 71
Janos and Putzi are watching from the second floor window as
Unity and Hitler return from their walk.
JANOS
You mustn't worry. Her cause is your
cause.
PUTZI
I'm not so sure.
JANOS
She's just a girl. All that can come out
of her head is what you put there in the
first place. Besides, he will hardly
turn to her for actual policy. Why would
he?
Janos LAUGHS at Putzi's naiveté. Putzi looks out the window.
Unity and Hitler, arm in arm. She leans her head against his
shoulder.
PUTZI
We serve his interests. She serves his
conceit. You tell me who's the more
powerful. I don't know.
CUT TO:
72 INT. HITLER'S APARTMENT IN MUNICH - NIGHT 72
Ornate and Teutonic, it is filled with art and statuary, all
of it commemorating war and myth. There is a grand piano
which seems to be PLAYING itself. Issuing from it is
something suitably Wagnerian. Hitler is SNORING on the sofa.
Unity, age 33, is in her hospital bed at the far end of the
room. She is looking at Hitler.
UNITY
I know. I was very silly about Eva but I
couldn't help it. I'm just a girl and
jealous by nature. How silly. I know
she had your body but I have your soul.
She may be yours of this earth, but I'll
be your reward beyond. Darling, prop a
pillow under your head if you want to
stop snoring.
In his half-sleep, Hitler grabs a pillow and places it under
his head. He stops SNORING. Now, though, von Ribbentrop is
sitting next to him and Putzi is PLAYING the piano.
TITLE:
"1937. Munich"
Von Ribbentrop is filing through his valise.
VON RIBBENTROP
Mein Fuhrer, it is imperative that we
have your approval on these communiqués.
Hitler, his eyes still closed, waves his hand.
HITLER
I've just completed a three hour speech
at the Sportspalast. Can this not wait
until morning?
VON RIBBENTROP
I would like this to be in Lord
Hammersley's hand not later than dawn.
He will be ensconced in his grouse after
that.
Unity enters with three filled cognac glasses on a tray. She
brings them to each.
HITLER
Unity? Is Lord Hammersley a likely ear
for our cause?
UNITY
Not really. His son was BYT but never
very political. More Oxford than
Cambridge and the fruit never falls far
from that tree.
Putzi stops playing.
PUTZI
If I might...
Hitler opens one eye and shuts Putzi up with his stare.
Unity goes back out. Hitler closes his eye. Von Ribbentrop
looks to make sure that Unity has left.
HITLER
Continue playing, Putzi.
VON RIBBENTROP
Mein Fuhrer, I must object. Is Fraulein
Mitford your Foreign Minister or am I?
Hitler opens his eyes, resigned to being awake.
HITLER
My Foreign Minister is the person most
likely to provide for my international
needs and right now, those needs are in
England. Good night, Ribbentrop.
Seeing that he has been dismissed, von Ribbentrop has little
choice but to leave.
VON RIBBENTROP
I will speak to you in the morning, mein
Fuhrer.
He gives a deep bow and exits. Unity comes back in the room
with some needlework and sits on the couch. Hitler rises.
He speaks with mock seriousness.
HITLER
Unity, liebling, you must be careful.
You have a powerful enemy in Herr von
Ribbentrop.
UNITY
Oh, my.
Hitler IMITATES von Ribbentrop with deadly accuracy.
HITLER
"I would like this to be in Lord
Hammersley's hand not later than dawn.
He will be ensconced in his grouse after
that." What does that mean!? "Ensconced
in his grouse"?!
Unity delights in the joke. Even Putzi has to bend a little
since it is at von Ribbentrop's expense
HITLER
I must be off to bed. Putzi, please
continue the concert for a few more
minutes. Unity, please feel free to stay
the night in the guest room.
Hitler returns to his IMITATION of von Ribbentrop, complete
with exaggerated bow.
HITLER
"I will speak to you in the morning, mein
freund und freundin!"
PUTZI AND UNITY
Good night, mein Fuhrer.
Hitler exits to the bedroom. After he is gone, Putzi signals
Unity to sit next to him at the piano as he plays. He plays
a bit more heavily and speaks quietly so as not to be heard.
PUTZI
Be very careful of von Ribbentrop. Just
because he is a fool doesn't mean that he
is not a danger. Sometimes, fools are
the greatest danger of all.
UNITY
The Fuhrer protects me.
PUTZI
You mustn't lionize the Fuhrer. He is
powerful and therefore he is vulnerable.
UNITY
What do you mean by that?
PUTZI
He has made his share of foolish moves.
UNITY
Such as?
PUTZI
Building up his war machine in defiance
of Versaille. All that tiresome Jew
baiting. Worst of all, he's creating a
soldier cult. Such things always rear
back on the leader.
UNITY
How dare you! After all he's done for
you! What you say is treasonous.
PUTZI
Unity, darling, criticism is not treason.
Unity, furious, raises her hand to slap Putzi but he blocks
the attempt.
PUTZI
Be careful, my dear, not to step on your
friends as you ascend the ladder. You
may need them on the way down.
He lets go of her hand and she backs down. He continues
playing.
CUT TO:
73 INT. PUTZI'S APARTMENT - A FEW DAYS LATER 73
Putzi is lying in bed. Next to him lies PUTZI'S FRIEND, the
woman with whom he has chosen to spend the night. The place
looks like it has withstood a pretty good-sized party.
The phone RINGS.
Putzi, waking from a deep slumber, picks it up.
PUTZI
Yes...where?...Where am I going?...What
the hell does he want me to do in
Spain?...All right. I'll be there in an
hour.
Putzi's Friend wakes up.
PUTZI'S FRIEND
What was that?
PUTZI
I'm sorry, my darling, but I must leave
you.
PUTZI'S FRIEND
Now?
PUTZI
When mein Fuhrer calls...
(he salutes)
Heil Hitler.
CUT TO:
74 EXT. AIRPORT - A SHORT WHILE LATER 74
It is quite gray and drizzly. A trimotor sits on the runway,
it's ENGINES TURNING. An SS COLONEL is standing by the
plane's open door. He wears a long black leather trench coat
and a snap-brim cap.
A car pulls in and Putzi gets out. He HEILS the Colonel who
responds with a HEIL and a crisp salute. He hands Putzi an
attaché. Putzi takes it and climbs aboard the plane.
The Colonel looks around then steps behind the plane. He
signals.
A personnel carrier drives up and out step three SS REGULARS,
each carrying a rifle. As the third one gets out, he reaches
behind the front seat and pulls out a bulky parachute. He
then gets in line with the other two.
The three SS Regulars get into the plane and the Colonel
closes the door. The plane taxis away as the Colonel walks
back to the flight station.
75 INT. FLIGHT STATION 75
The Colonel goes to the counter.
SS COLONEL
Flight adjutant.
The FLIGHT ADJUTANT, a rather callow young officer, enters.
FLIGHT ADJUTANT
Sir?
SS COLONEL
The passenger manifest on that Heinkel,
please.
The Flight Adjutant files through a few clipboards and hands
him the right one. The SS Colonel looks at it.
SS COLONEL (cont'd)
This manifest is wrong. It says four
passengers. There are only three.
FLIGHT ADJUTANT
I'm sorry, sir, but the pilot just called
in the confirmation...
SS COLONEL
See to it that it is changed.
FLIGHT ADJUTANT
Sir?
SS COLONEL
Immediately.
FLIGHT ADJUTANT
Yes, sir.
The SS Colonel walks out.
