52 INT. OSTERIA BAVARIA, MUNICH - DAY 52
It is a rather stuffy, street-level restaurant, filled with
dark wood wainscoting and bushels of flowers. The main room
is long and narrow with a row of tables against one wall
facing a bar along the other. There is a small hallway going
off to the private dining room.
Unity, age 33 and in her hospital gown, is lying in bed at
the far end of this deserted restaurant. Hitler is seated at
a small table next to the bed. He is drinking a beer. A
plate of raw carrots is in front of him.
UNITY
Der, die, das; des, der, den. Der, die,
das; des, der, den. So much improved.
Poor Fraulein Baum! One day I'm Jew
baiting her and the next, driving her to
distraction with questions about umlauts
and declensions. And Putzi, what a dear!
Unity's mood suddenly darkens. Hitler notices this.
UNITY
I don't mean to lecture you, darling, but
you know, you could have treated him
better. After all, he was faithful to
you in his fashion.
Hitler puts down his beer and hangs his head dejectedly.
UNITY
Oh, my little boy. Don't be sad. Here
we are. The Osteria Bavaria. Our
happiest moments!
Their attention is drawn by the sound of DINERS going about
the business of lunch hour. They look up.
53 INT. DINING ROOM 53
It is filled with diners. Putzi is seated at the table next
to the entrance to the private dining room.
TITLE:
"1936. Munich"
Unity enters from the street. The MAITRE DÉ crosses to greet
them.
MAITRE DÉ
Ahh, Miss Mitford. Lovely to see you
again. Herr Hanfstaengl is waiting at
your usual table.
UNITY
Thank you, Karl.
He escorts Unity to the table. Putzi rises to greet her.
PUTZI
Unity, liebchen. You look...awful.
UNITY
Awful?
Putzi takes his napkin and dips it into his water glass. He
rubs the make-up off Unity's face. She recoils.
PUTZI
I have told you: He has an abhorrence to
make-up. Today may be the day.
Unity pulls the napkin from him and opens her compact. She
wipes off her own make-up.
PUTZI
You understand that it is not my taste,
but his. If you wish to meet him, you
must do so on his ground and by his
rules.
UNITY
Yes, of course. So sorry.
She finishes up and smiles at Putzi.
UNITY (cont'd)
An understandable lapse, though. I've
been here every Tuesday and Thursday for
three months but he has yet to give me a
second glance.
PUTZI
Just seeding the territory, my dear.
Now, I must go and greet him.
Putzi leaves the restaurant.
Unity is left a moment. She looks about the room then takes
out her compact. She checks for any last vestiges of make-up
then closes the mirror and puts it away. She sits for a
moment. It is clear that a sense of excitement is building
in her.
The sound of AUTOMOBILES PULLING UP to the curb. Unity looks
out the door.
54 UNITY'S POV 54
An entourage of official looking automobiles pulls up to the
curb. Putzi opens the back door of one and out steps Hitler.
Putzi opens the restaurant door and Hitler brushes in,
leading a trail of officials and SS officers.
The diners leap to their feet and let out with a HEIL.
Hitler dismissively salutes back.
Hitler, flanked by Putzi, walks straight to the corridor
leading to the private dining room. Unity is standing there,
her arm still fixed in a salute.
Hitler stops a moment and sizes her up. Putzi leans in and
whispers something in his ear but Hitler waves him off. He
then sweeps off down the corridor, followed by his entourage.
Unity is left standing there, feeling apparently foolish.
She sheepishly lowers her arm and sits down.
WAITER enters and places a sandwich in front of her. She
just stares at it. After a moment, she takes a bite which
leaves a small spot of mayonnaise on the corner of her mouth.
Putzi enters. Unity looks up at him. He takes a napkin from
the table and wipes the mayonnaise off her mouth.
PUTZI
How many times must I tell you? When you
meet the Fuhrer, you must have a clean
face.
55 INT. CORRIDOR TO PRIVATE DINING ROOM 55
Putzi escorts Unity down the tunnel-like corridor. If she is
nervous, she is not giving it away.
56 INT. PRIVATE DINING ROOM 56
A more expansive and brighter room than the main dining room,
it has one wall of windows which flood the room with light.
Unity enters with Putzi. The various officials and SS
officers are standing for her. At the end of this column and
in front of the head table stands Hitler. His hands are
folded in front of him.
Putzi escorts Unity to Hitler. Reflexively, she curtsies to
him.
UNITY
Mein Fuhrer.
HITLER
"Mein Fuhrer"? But I am not your king!
He LAUGHS and the others join in. Putzi steps forward.
PUTZI
Mein Fuhrer, might I have the honor of
introducing Lady Unity Mitford, daughter
of Lord and Lady Redesdale, great English
nobility.
HITLER
Lady Mitford.
PUTZI
Lady Mitford, this is Herr Adolf Hitler,
Chancellor of the German Reich. Leader
of the German people. Man.
This last comment does not fall so well. Hitler brushes past
it. He extends his arm to Unity and takes her about the
room.
HITLER
Gentleman, may I present Lady Unity
Mitford. An English cousin. Lady
Mitford, my Minister of Propaganda and
Enlightenment, Herr Josef Goebbels.
JOSEF GOEBBELS is a short, hatchet-faced man. Bright but
ruthless, he is an odd cross between devoted family man and
consigliere to a Mafia chief. He CLICKS HIS HEELS and kisses
Unity's hand.
GOEBBELS
Lady Mitford.
UNITY
Such beautiful eyes. You know Herr
Goebbels, you so remind me of a dear old
friend.
GOEBBELS
How kind of you to say.
UNITY
Yes. His name was Ratular. The same
brown eyes and features. Striking, in
fact.
He CLICKS HIS HEELS and kisses her hand again.
GOEBBELS
Most kind. You must meet Frau Goebbels
and the children. We have eight of them.
UNITY
Good Lord! Populating the Reich must be
a true passion for you!
All LAUGH, particularly Hitler and Goebbels. Hitler moves
her down the line.
Putzi smiles at his triumph.
CUT TO:
57 SAME A SHORT WHILE LATER 57
Unity is seated on Hitler's right at the head table, Goebbels
on his left. Putzi is next to Unity. They are just
finishing up their lunch.
HITLER
(to Unity)
Did you enjoy your herring?
UNITY
Yes, mein Fuhrer. Very much.
Hitler laughs.
HITLER
There is no need to call me "mein
Fuhrer," Lady Mitford. You are British.
You have your own leaders.
UNITY
I consider myself a citizen of both
England and Germany. As such, I owe my
fealty to you as well as to the crown.
Goebbels scribbles down a note.
GOEBBELS
A most lovely sentiment, Lady Mitford.
But how does your government feel about
this?
UNITY
Our government, like yours, follows the
will of the people and I believe that our
people will welcome any allegiance which
brings our two countries together.
GOEBBELS
A diplomatist!
UNITY
No, a realist. Our fascist movement
grows day by day. Our nobility finds
more and more favor with the cause and
less and less with the weak policies of a
Liberal government.
HITLER
Lovely blond hair and blue eyes. How far
do you trace your lineage in England?
UNITY
As far back as I know.
HITLER
Pity. Allow me this.
Hitler reaches into his pocket and pulls out a Nazi Party
badge. Taking Goebbel's pen, he scrawls his signature on the
back. He puts it on her lapel.
UNITY
Thank you, mein Fuhrer.
He rises. All rise around him, save Unity. He bends down
and kisses her hand. There is some eye contact for a moment.
HITLER
Will you join me again next Tuesday?
UNITY
Of course, mein Fuhrer.
Hitler smiles then sweeps out of the room. He is followed by
all with Putzi careful to be the last out the door. He looks
to Unity.
Unity bursts into a big smile and runs to Putzi.
Impulsively, she goes to hug him then stops herself. He
gently hugs her and she melts a bit into his arms.
UNITY (cont'd)
He's a lonely little Fuhrer, don't you
think? I see that in his eyes.
PUTZI
How wise you are.
UNITY
But not for the flesh. His needs are of
the soul. I can see that. I will be his
soulmate. How excruciatingly wonderful
that will be!
An ADJUTANT enters.
ADJUTANT
Herr Hanfstaengl? The Fuhrer wishes to
leave.
PUTZI
Coming.
He kisses Unity on the forehead.
PUTZI
A good day's work, my dear.
He exits. Unity stands there a moment. She walks about the
room, touching things as though to place them into her
memory. She sits in his chair at the head of the table and
looks across the room.
There is a large color portrait of Hitler on the opposing
wall.
UNITY
Beautiful blue eyes. So penetrating.
They will test me, mein Fuhrer. I will
be strong.
DISSOLVE TO:
58 EXT. ENGLISCHER GARTEN - A FEW DAYS LATER 58
It is the same cul-de-sac as before.
Unity is nude save for a pair of sunglasses and lying on her
stomach. Her clothes are next to her. A shadow crosses over
her face. She looks up.
A man silhouetted by the sun. His age and features are
indeterminate.
MAN
Have you a cigarette, please?
The man steps away from the sun. He is ROLF, an SS captain
in full uniform. Young, dark and very good looking. He has
intense blue eyes.
UNITY
(more to herself)
Darling Storm.
ROLF
Please?
Unity reaches over to her purse.
UNITY
Yes, I believe I have some in here
somewhere.
She finds the pack and hands it to him.
ROLF
So, you are English. Surprising.
He pulls out his lighter and lights the cigarette. Unity
notices the SS's skull and crossbones on the lighter.
UNITY
I don't know why it should be surprising
to find an English girl in the Englischer
Garten.
ROLF
Surprising because you do not find
English girls sunbathing like German
girls...in the Englischer Garten.
UNITY
English by birth, German by temperament.
You're very handsome.
ROLF
Thank you. And you...
UNITY
I imagine you're quite hard to resist.
A bit unsure how to react, Rolf LAUGHS.
CUT TO:
59 EXT. PATH IN ENGLISCHER GARTEN - A FEW MOMENTS LATER 59
Unity, now dressed, is walking along the path with some
dispatch. Rolf is keeping up with her but it is clear that
he is rushing.
ROLF
You know, mein liebchen, running is not
necessary.
UNITY
A good clip. Good for the lungs.
Rolf reaches to slow her down. He takes her hand. Unity
stops. Rolf puts his hands on her shoulder. Unity tenses
up. She looks down the road.
A YOUNG GERMAN SOLDIER riding a bicycle.
UNITY
Look!
Unity breaks from Rolf's touch and runs into the path. She
plants her feet and, as the rider approaches, suddenly raises
her arm in a salute.
UNITY
Heil Hitler!
Surprised, the Young German Soldier raises his arm.
YOUNG GERMAN SOLDIER
Heil Hitler!
His bike, no longer being steered, careens off the road and
into a tree. The Young German Soldier sprawls on the ground.
Unity explodes with LAUGHTER then takes off running down the
path. Rolf takes off after her.
CUT TO:
60 INT. UNITY'S APARTMENT - A SHORT WHILE LATER 60
It is a small, humbly furnished studio, more a student
apartment than an adult one. The room is dominated by a bed
and filled with an odd combination of girlish knick knacks
and Hitler memorabilia.
Unity and Rolf enter through the front door. She crosses
through the dark to turn on the light next to the bed.
UNITY
Please close the door and do nothing.
He closes the door then turns back to her. Unity undresses
as Rolf watches. When she is completely undressed, she
crawls under the sheets.
Rolf undresses. Unity lights a cigarette and watches this
rather dispassionately.
When he is undressed, he crosses to the bed and gets in.
Unity snuffs out her cigarette.
UNITY (cont'd)
Now, my darling Storm, you may try.
A little confused, Rolf begins kissing her neck then crawls
on top of her. She pushes him off with great force. He
tries again. Again she pushes him off. Angry, he slaps her.
Unity leaps out of bed. She grabs her shirt and pulls off
the Party badge. She holds it out to him.
UNITY (cont'd)
Look at it! Look!
Unsure, Rolf takes the badge and looks at it. He begins to
hand it back.
UNITY (cont'd)
The back! Turn it over!
Rolf turns over the badge and sees that it is personally
signed by Hitler. A look of terror crosses over his face.
ROLF
Unmoeglich! ("Impossible!")
Unity takes back the badge.
UNITY
You're here for a reason! You advance, I
resist! You lose, I win. These are the
rules.
Rolf attempts to get out of the bed. Unity brandishes the
badge with the signature facing him. Like a spell, it seems
to propel him back into the bed. Once he appears docile,
Unity crawls back into bed. She lies down next to Rolf and
closes her eyes.
UNITY (cont'd)
All right now, darling Storm. Advance.
DISSOLVE TO:
61 SAME THE NEXT MORNING 61
The room is the same except that now the bed is the hospital
bed. The 33 year-old Unity is sitting up in the bed. Next
to her is the sleeping Hitler, still dressed in his uniform.
Unity is stroking his hair.
UNITY
Resistance only strengthens the resolve
of the true believer. You said so
yourself, my darling Fuhrer.
CUT TO:
62 INT. FOREIGN OFFICE, LONDON - A FEW MONTHS LATER 62
TITLE:
"1936. The Foreign Office in Whitehall, London"
It is an old office but one clearly in the process of being
moved into. Boxes are everywhere, some opened, some sealed.
ANTHONY EDEN, a tall, good looking man of near regal bearing,
is filing through boxes. He is obviously looking for
something important. Robert Shelley enters.
ROBERT
Good morning, Minister. You wanted to
see me?
EDEN
Shelley, yes. What's in that box over
there?
Robert goes to check it out.
ROBERT
Some documents. They appear to pertain
to the build-up of the German armaments
industry.
EDEN
Blast. Not at all needed. Where is
that?
ROBERT
Where is what, sir?
EDEN
Well, no matter. Best to do our
business. Take a seat.
Robert does so. Eden continues searching through the boxes
as he speaks with Robert.
EDEN (cont'd)
Word on the corridor is that you once
dated a woman named Unity Mitford.
ROBERT
Sir?
EDEN
Well, did you?
ROBERT
I wouldn't say that. I wouldn't say that
anybody really dates Miss Mitford.
EDEN
It would appear that someone does.
ROBERT
Sir?
Eden pulls a tennis racket out of a box.
EDEN
Bloody hell! Coxcomb!?
COXCOMB comes to the door. An officious young civil servant.
COXCOMB
Yes, Minister?
EDEN
What's this bloody tennis racket doing in
a box marked "Top Secret"?
COXCOMB
I don't know, Minister.
EDEN
Well, find out who put this idiotic thing
in there and report back to me.
COXCOMB
Yes, sir.
He takes the tennis racket and exits. Edens goes back to his
search.
EDEN
Where were we? Oh, yes. That Mitford
creature. It appears your old chum has
gotten herself involved with Herr Hitler.
ROBERT
Unity? Involved? Oh, sir, I don't
believe that's possible.
EDEN
Whether you believe it or not, our
reports are telling us that it's true and
that she's speaking without portfolio.
ROBERT
Even if she is - and I have a very hard
time believing it, sir - how likely is
Hitler to take the word of a twenty-two
year-old English girl?
EDEN
And what's wrong with English girls?
ROBERT
Nothing's wrong with English girls. I
meant...
EDEN
Aha!
Eden finds what he has been looking for. It is the severed
and opened paw of a gorilla. He places it on his desk. As
he speaks, he attempts to light a pipe.
EDEN (cont'd)
Miss Mitford is apparently trying to act
as some kind of ambassador to the
Reichstag and she has managed to grab
Herr Hitler's ear. Now, she's probably a
complete ninny but this doesn't preclude
her from a certain service to us. I need
you to get over there, find out what the
hell she's saying, and determine if
there's some use for us in this fool.
Unhappy with the draw from his pipe, Eden knocks the burning
tobacco into the gorilla's palm. Robert winces at the act.
CUT TO:
63 INT. UNITY'S APARTMENT - A FEW DAYS LATER 63
It is empty. The sound of a KEY TURNING in the door, then it
opens. Robert enters with FRAU HENTSCHLER. She is the
short, plump, middle-aged landlady of the house.
FRAU HENTSCHLER
No, it is good. Fraulein Mitford always
tells me to let her callers in. In...in!
Robert enters, carrying a small diplomatic pouch.
FRAU HENTSCHLER (cont'd)
Would you like tea? An orange? Fraulein
Mitford gets them for me.
ROBERT
No...thank you. Do you know when Miss
Mitford will be back?
FRAU HENTSCHLER
Soon...soon.
Frau Hentschler exits. Robert walks about the room. Photos
and memorabilia of Hitler have grown exponentially, like
scraps of fandom in a teenager's room. Robert picks up a
framed photograph of Hitler.
It is a very severe photo. It is autographed, "To Unity,
Adolf Hitler."
Robert puts it back down and crosses over to the night stand.
There are a cigarette box and a cigar box on top of it. He
opens the cigarette box and takes one. Looking for a match,
he opens the cigar box.
It is filled with dozens of SS lighters, all with the
distinctive skull and crossbones.
Robert pulls one out and lights his cigarette.
The sound of a KEY IN THE DOOR. Robert turns to it.
Unity enters. She is dressed in a black shirt and black
slacks, a makeshift SS uniform. On her, it looks almost
stylish. She is carrying some packages.
UNITY
Bobby!
She drops the packages and raises her arm in a salute.
UNITY (cont'd)
Heil Hitler.
She crosses to him and shakes his hand.
ROBERT
Look at you.
UNITY
Do you like it? It's my "handmaiden of
the Reich" uniform. Isn't it the most
darling thing?
ROBERT
Then it's true.
UNITY
What's true? Are people talking about
me? Tell...tell!
ROBERT
They say you've gone over.
UNITY
Gone over! How delicious!
ROBERT
This isn't a game, you know.
UNITY
Of course it is! What are they saying?
You must tell me!
ROBERT
For one, that you're sleeping with
Hitler.
Unity breaks out LAUGHING.
UNITY
Not at all!
ROBERT
Well at least that's a blessing.
UNITY
We commune on a much higher plane.
ROBERT
Unity, are you mad?
UNITY
I mean it, Bobbie. I speak to God
through him. Don't ask me how he does it
or how I know it to be true. He just
does and it is. Buy me a Schokolade?
CUT TO:
64 INT. CHOCOLATIER - A SHORT WHILE LATER 64
A pleasant little shop with a few tables and several
incongruous Nazi flags and posters. Unity and Robert are
seated at one of the tables.
SHOPKEEPER, a portly fatherly-type, is serving coffee to
Robert and hot chocolate to Unity.
ROBERT
(to Shopkeeper)
Danke.
UNITY
Yes, Danke. And heil.
She salutes him and he returns the gesture. Robert winces at
this.
UNITY (cont'd)
Oh, Bobby. Do lighten a bit.
Everybody's doing it.
ROBERT
I've seen your parents. They send their
regards. And your sister, Diana.
UNITY
I haven't heard from Diana in...such a
long time.
ROBERT
You know she's divorced Guinness and
married Mosley.
UNITY
(smiles)
Yes, I know. I'm so very glad for her.
ROBERT
You mean that? You're not jealous?
Unity shakes her head. The gesture displays a sincerity.
ROBERT
I thought... This whole thing with Herr
Hitler. I assumed it was...jealousy.
UNITY
At first, maybe it was. Not now. It's
so funny. I haven't even thought of
Diana in...
(Her voice trails off a moment)
No. Not jealousy. I have no more of
that for anyone. Oh, Bobby, if I could
show you how happy I am. He touches me.
I mean, he really touches me.
ROBERT
I must tell you, Unity. I'm here on a
mission.
UNITY
A secret mission?! Do tell!
ROBERT
I might as well. It's about you. I've
been sent here by Anthony Eden himself to
try and talk sense to you.
UNITY
Anthony Eden? Silly fool! The Fuhrer
has no use for him! Oh, Robert, if
you're backing Eden, you've hitched your
trolley to the wrong horse. Believe me.
ROBERT
The word is that you're speaking without
portfolio. You're disseminating policy
where none exists.
UNITY
England and Germany must be friendlier.
Mein Fuhrer sees that.
So must you, and Eden and Chamberlain.
The whole silly lot of you. I'm
England's greatest friend. I can bring
us together.
(smiling)
Now, what else have you heard? I must
know!
ROBERT
We've heard that Hitler is considering a
move against Czechoslovakia. He needs
access to the oil and coal. We believe
for a war machine.
UNITY
I wouldn't know about that. We only
speak of England.
ROBERT
But you could find out.
Unity is thunderstruck by the thought.
ROBERT (cont'd)
You could help England in a most
particular...and sanctioned way.
She slaps Robert.
UNITY
Do you think I could help England by
betraying mein Fuhrer? Hitler is our
friend. Can't you see that?
ROBERT
Unity...
UNITY
You...how misguided you all must be!
Robert reaches into his diplomatic pouch and pulls out a
sheaf of papers.
ROBERT
I don't know what you know. I don't know
how you'll react to this, but I'm
instructed to share it with you.
Unity takes the papers from him and looks at them.
ROBERT (cont'd)
Herr Hitler is communing elsewhere. Her
name is Eva Braun. She's the shop
assistant for Hoffman, his photographer.
Unity is shaken by this.
UNITY
Rumors. I've heard them. They're not
believable.
ROBERT
They're quite confirmed. Would you like
to see the photographs?
UNITY
I've seen doctored photographs before.
You must think me a silly girl.
ROBERT
No, Unity. Not silly at all.
