39 EXT. SKY OVER NUREMBERG 39

The city below. The shadow of an airplane rushes over it.

            UNITY

Same as before. She closes her eyes and drops her hand. The

sun hits her face directly. The shadow of the plane crosses

            over her face.

                                                                 CUT TO:

40 EXT. THE ENGLISCHER GARTEN - DAY 40

The 33 year-old Unity, still in hospital gown, has her face

angled to the sun with her eyes closed. The shadow of an

            airplane passes over her face.

She is sitting up in her bed which is now situated on a cul

de-sac next to a stream. It is across from a small

waterfall. The area is heavily wooded.

At the foot of her bed is the Doctor. He is filling a

hypodermic needle. He smiles at her.

            Unity smiles back.

The Doctor begins to administer the needle to Unity's arm.

Unity looks at the needle going into her arm and smiles. She

            looks back up.

It is now Hitler who is administering the needle. He sees

            her and smiles.

The world behind her begins to spin very quickly. Unity

remains a calm, smiling and fixed center in the spin.

                                                            DISSOLVE TO:

     41 INT. HOFBRAUKELLER, NUREMBERG - EVENING 41

A big and expansive outdoor beer garden, shaded by trees and

illuminated by the small lights strung throughout. The place

is filled with hundreds of soldiers and civilians, nearly all

wearing swastika armbands. There is an air of overpowering

            joy to the evening.

Unity and Diana are in the middle of this maelstrom, the

crowds moving and dancing around them. They sit at a wooden

bench and each has a large stein.

Unity is quietly fascinated by the surroundings. Diana is

less so. She is rifling through her purse.

                                DIANA

Those photos were in here this morning.

                                UNITY

                          (not listening)

                      Hhhmmm?

                                DIANA

The photos of Tom and that new girlfriend

                      of his.

                                UNITY

                          (only marginal interest)

                      New girlfriend?

                                DIANA

                          (finding the photos)

                      Here they are.

She hands them to Unity who dispassionately files through

            them.

The photos are of Tom and his new girlfriend seated next to

each other, another of the two of them posed by a tennis

court. In the third one, they are embracing. It is very

affectionate and the only one with physical contact.

Unity gives a grimace to this third one and hands the photos

            back to Diana.

                                UNITY

                      I don't like her.

                                DIANA

She's really quite darling. Athletic and

                      very quick-witted. She'll take Tom for a

few much-needed rounds about the ring.

                                UNITY

She's all wrong for him. You can see it

                      instantly.

Not sure what she means, Diana looks at the photos.

                                DIANA

That's hardly fair. You're judging her.

                                UNITY

Of course I am. Look at the way she has

                      her hands all about him.

Diana looks at the third photo.

                                DIANA

I'd say they have their hands all about

                      each other.

Unity gives her a shrug that says such behavior is a bad

            thing.

                                DIANA (cont'd)

Bobo darling, it is what people do. It

                      is a beautiful thing.

Unity looks out to the dance floor then points out a couple

            to Diana.

The couple is comprised of a FAT OLDER MAN and a THIN YOUNG

WOMAN. He is wearing a bib over his jacket and lederhosen.

She looks rather vampish. Although dancing, his hands are

groping for whatever he can get.

                                UNITY

                      How can that be beautiful?

                                DIANA

                          (giving up)

I don't know what to say to you when you

get like this. If you'll excuse me, I'll

just make a tactical retreat to the

                      sausage tray.

                                UNITY

Really? Expecting to find your little

sausage, Oswald, there? Really, Diana, I

think you've sold yourself quite short on

                      that one.

About to protest, Diana thinks better of this. She takes her

            purse and exits.

Feeling triumphant, Unity turns her attention back to the odd

            couple on the floor.

The couple dance until the Man's hammy hand finds her bottom.

She angrily pushes him away and YELLS at him in German. He

LAUGHS loudly at this. She slaps him which only makes him

            LAUGH all the more.

The Man turns and scans the beer garden for another willing

            partner.

Unity is laughing at this exchange. Suddenly, the Man's

attention turns to her. He drunkenly stumbles toward Unity,

calling to her in slurred and incomprehensible German.

                                FAT OLDER MAN

Darf ich mich zu Ihnen setzen? (May I sit

                      with you?)

Surprised and frightened, Unity rears back in her chair. He

continues to advance until he is looming above her.

                                FAT OLDER MAN

Darf ich Sie zu einem bier einladen?

(May I get you a beer?)

Unity leaps to her feet and backs up against the table. He

thinks that she wants to dance. He bows and motions to the

            dance floor.

                                FAT OLDER MAN (cont'd)

                      Ahh! Wollen wirtanzen? (Shall we

                      dance?)

Unity freezes. People around have begun to notice this and

laugh. The laughter brings up a well of anger in her. The

            Man addresses the others

                                FAT OLDER MAN (cont'd)

Sie ist eine kalt Virgin! ("She's a cold

                      virgin!")

He turns back to Unity and smiles. He once again bows and

            motions to the dance floor.

                                FAT OLDER MAN (cont'd)

                      Kommen. ("Come.")

With all the defiance she can muster, Unity steps into the

Man's face. She measures her thoughts then lets him have

            them.

                                UNITY

Der, die, das, des, der, den!

This silences everyone. It certainly confuses the Man.

                                FAT OLDER MAN

                      Der, die, das... Vas ist...

His confusion sets everyone to laughing, now at him. He

breaks out laughing at himself and bows to all. He exits

back to the dance floor and everyone goes back to their

            beers.

                                PUTZI (O.S.)

                      Marvelous! Absolutely marvelous!

Diana is standing there with PUTZI HANFSTAENGL. Putzi is

stocky, looking something like a bouncer with a short,

triangular mustache. He is, nonetheless, a man of some

breeding with a taste for the finer things. He fancies

himself to be an intellectual. He wears a Nazi party pin on

            the lapel of his jacket.

                                DIANA

Bobo, can you believe it? I just found

stumbled into an old friend. Putzi, this

                      is my sister, Unity.

Putzi reaches for Unity's gloved hand and kisses it.

                                PUTZI

                      Enchanted, kind miss. Enchanted and

                      delighted.

                                UNITY

                          (sarcastic)

                      Thank you for your help.

The comment at first seems to confuse Putzi, then he explodes

            with LAUGHTER.

                                PUTZI

If I felt that you needed it... Mein

Gott, the Fuhrer should have so defiant a

                      Valkyrie!

His LAUGH is bold and infectious. Unity and Diana pick it

            up.

                                                                 CUT TO:

     42 SAME - A SHORT WHILE LATER 42

Unity and Diana are seated at the table.

                                DIANA

Darling, you must help me out with the

foulest of fibs. I met Putzi at a

Fascist rally in London. He's very big

with Herr Hitler, you know. To make a

long story short, I've lied to him. I've

told him that Oz sent you and I here as

the official emissaries of the BUF.

                                UNITY

                      Whatever for?

                                DIANA

We need tickets for tomorrow. We can't

get into that circus without a kart.

                                UNITY

                      And how is dear Oz?

                                DIANA

You know, Bobo darling, this jealousy of

yours is becoming more than a bit

                      tiresome.

                                UNITY

                      Jealous? Of your little tinpot?

                          (laughs)

Believe me, Diana, If I wanted I could do

                      far better than Oswald Mosley.

                                DIANA

                      I said nothing of Oz.

Putzi enters. He is followed by a WAITRESS. She is

carrying a tray of beers and a huge plate of sausage. He

            passes these out.

                                PUTZI

"Drink no longer water, but use a little

wine for thy stomach's sake and thine

                      often infirmities." St. Timothy.

                                UNITY

                      A learned man.

                                PUTZI

Do you know the Bible? Marvelous

                      stories!

                                DIANA

                      Putzi's a Harvard man.

                                PUTZI

Please. It was merely a school, a place

                      to educate my tastes.

                                DIANA

Putzi...liebling, I wonder if you can do

the BUF a great big favor.

                                PUTZI

Lady Diana, my love, if this favor will

help cement better relations between dem

Deutsche volk and our English brothers

                      and sisters...

                                DIANA

Let's start small. Let's say this one

                      will help out the sisters.

Putzi is beginning to catch the drift and smiles.

                                PUTZI

Two sisters very much in particular, I

                      think.

            Diana smiles.

                                PUTZI (cont'd)

And this cementing of relations will

                      require...?

                                DIANA

Two tickets to the rally tomorrow.

Putzi thinks about this a moment, as though weighing what he

believes he can get for the favor.

                                PUTZI

It is done. You will sit with me at the

                      foot of the Fuhrer.

He salutes them with his stein and they return the salute.

Diana is visibly excited by her coup. Unity is far less so,

            looking almost disappointed.

                                                                 CUT TO:

43 INT. ENTRY TO LUITPOLDHAIN ASSEMBLY - THE NEXT DAY 43

The enclosed entrance to the large, open-air assembly grounds

outside of Nuremberg. It is filled with people on their way

to the rally. Unity, Diana and Putzi make their way through

            the crowd.

                                PUTZI

This marvelous structure in less than a

year. And the Congress Hall and the

                      stadium at Zeppelinwiese. Amazing what

this Fuhrer is capable of accomplishing!

            Diana spots a washroom.

                                DIANA

I must stop before the show.

She crosses into the washroom. Putzi and Unity stand outside

the door. Putzi takes out a cigarette.

                                PUTZI

Your sister is a remarkable woman. Most

                      cultured and political.

                                UNITY

                      Can I have a fag?

                                PUTZI

I don't think that would be wise. Not

here. The Fuhrer believes that women

                      should not smoke.

Unity impulsively takes the pack from his hand.

                                UNITY

                      I disagree.

She looks at Putzi. He looks decidedly uncomfortable. She

relents and hands back the pack.

                                PUTZI

You understand, my dear, that I do not

object. As I was saying, your sister...

                                UNITY

Do you know that my sister is fucking

                      Oswald Mosley?

            Putzi bursts out LAUGHING.

                                PUTZI

Yes, as a matter of fact we do.

                          (with mock conspiracy)

Do you know that your sister insists on

receiving oral stimulation but will not

                      give it in return?

                                UNITY

No! Really?! How do you know? Do tell!

He forms a "bird" by interlocking his thumbs and flapping his

hands. He then puts his finger to his mouth: SSSHHH. They

both let out with very bawdy LAUGHS.

                                UNITY (cont'd)

                      Oswald is a pimp.

                                PUTZI

Yes, a pimp. A very small fish, but one

of some use in the Reich's ocean.

                                UNITY

I'm sure he is. But if you could see the

way she shows him off! Revolting. And

both still married, not that that should

                      make a difference.

Diana comes out of the washroom. She appears a bit

            disheveled.

                                DIANA

                          (to Putzi)

You must have a talk with your Fuhrer

about the deplorable state of that loo.

                                PUTZI

                      Immediately. Shall we go in?

Putzi leads them onto the assembly grounds.

     44 EXT. - ASSEMBLY GROUNDS 44

They are massive and very Romanesque in their grandeur. A

huge open field surrounded by column-topped seating. At the

front sits a stage dominated by five columns with swastika

banners hanging between each. Downstage, like the prow of a

            ship, is the podium.

Unity, Diana and Putzi make their way through the CHEERING

crowd. As they pass, people turn to them and HEIL with joy.

Many throw flowers to the two young women.

                                UNITY

                          (to Putzi)

                      They're so friendly.

                                PUTZI

Blond hair and blue eyes. You are their

                      Aryan goddess.

GIGGLING at the thought, Unity begins to give queenly waves

to the crowd. They HEIL in return.

The three are engulfed in the celebration.

                                                                 CUT TO:

45 EXT. FRONT OF HOUSE - A FEW MOMENTS LATER 45

Unity, Diana and Putzi move into their seats. They are

            directly below the main podium.

As they sit, there is a loud FANFARE from a group of

Blackshirt trumpeters. This is followed by a DRUM ROLL from

a dozen Hitlerjugend. The crowd, boisterous until now, falls

suddenly silent. There is a very long and still pause.

Unity looks about. All eyes are pointed up to the podium.

Suddenly, there is a huge SHOUT from the crowd. Unity turns

and looks up to the podium.

            UNITY'S POV

Hitler standing at the podium. Arms folded across his chest,

he stares with quiet defiance at the crowd. He is very close

and looms over her. After a moment, he raises one hand and

the crowd is once again silent.

He begins his speech. It is in German. At first, he is

quiet, almost hesitant. But then he builds quickly to a

fever pitch. The words, though, are not heard. Instead, the

"Liebestod" from "Tristan and Isolde", romantic yet heavy and

forbidding, replaces the words. Hitler's speech becomes more

a scored pantomime than a diatribe.

Unity watches with mounting excitement. She is visibly

moved, and deeply so, by the presence of Hitler.

                                PUTZI

                          (to Unity)

Do you wish me to translate

                                UNITY

I don't need the words. I hear his

                      heart.

                                DIANA

                      I need the words.

Putzi leans toward her and away from Unity.

                                PUTZI

It's all hatred for the socialists, the

communist, the Jews. The people never

seem to tire of the good old songs.

Unity turns to them with anger.

                                UNITY

                      Quiet!

Unity turns back and looks up at Hitler.

Hitler is staring back at Unity. His gaze is tight and

hypnotic. Hitler raises is hand in a heil.

The crowd, Unity included, leap to their feet and return the

            salute with a loud "HEIL!"

Hitler returns to the crowd and salutes them. They HEIL back

            with great abandon.

Unity is still frozen with her salute while the CHEERS

            escalate around her.

Putzi leans into Unity and speaks directly into her ear.

                                PUTZI

He is certainly more than your sister's

                      Mosley.

                                UNITY

                          (with quiet fervor)

Oh, yes. Oh, yes. So much more.

                                                                 CUT TO:

46 INT. ALMASY APARTMENT - LATER THAT EVENING 46

It is one of the several homes of JANOS and MARIE ALMASY.

They are a wealthy Hungarian couple much enamored of Hitler.

Marie is in her late 40's and confined to a wheelchair. She

is intelligent and highly pragmatic. Her husband, Janos, is

more of a dreamer and a schemer. In his early 50's and

courtly, he is hardly romantic. He will bed any woman who

shows the least interest. His marriage with Marie is one of

            friendship, finance and convenience.

Unity, Diana and Putzi are standing outside the apartment

door. It opens and immediately the many occupants of the

room shout "HEIL HITLER" to the three of them. Janos greets

            them as they come in.

                                JANOS

                      Putzi!

                          (referring to the two Mitfords)

                      And you've brought these lovely

                      decorations for our party.

                                PUTZI

These are the Mitford girls. English.

The daughters of Lord and Lady Redesdale.

Mrs. Brian Guinness - Lady Diana - and

her sister, Lady Unity. The Count and

Countess Janos and Marie Almasy, decadent

                      vestiges of the late Austro-Hungarian

                      Empire.

                                MARIE

                      Welcome, my dears.

Janos greets both with a hand kiss but is obviously more

            taken by Unity.

                                JANOS

                      Dearest Miss, welcome. Permit me?

He takes Unity by the arm and leads her into the room. Marie

            wheels herself back in.

                                PUTZI (TO DIANA)

Unity must be careful. For Janos, a

crippled wife is a powerful aphrodisiac.

                                DIANA

Worry for him, darling. My sister is a

                      virulent virgin.

Both LAUGH and enter the party.

                                                            DISSOLVE TO:

47 INT. ALMASY BEDROOM - LATER THAT EVENING 47

Unity is alone in the dark. She is holding a glass of

champagne and looking out the window.

The Fortress overlooking Nuremberg. It is lit up and

            fireworks are EXPLODING overhead.

Janos enters the room. He turns on the light. This

            "awakens" Unity with a start.

                                JANOS

I'm sorry. Do you wish the light off?

            He turns it off.

                                UNITY

                      No. On, please.

He turns it back on. Unity walks away from the window and

Janos crosses to it. He looks out.

                                JANOS

                      He is up there tonight.

                                UNITY

Yes. How well do you know him?

                                JANOS

How well does any man know him?

                                UNITY

                      You talk like a diplomat.

                                JANOS

No, just...what was it Putzi called me?

just a "decadent vestige of the late

                      Austro-Hungarian Empire." Charming

                      Putzi.

                                UNITY

Please: How well do you know him?

                                JANOS

Herr Hitler and I have met socially on a

number of occasions. I cannot consider

him an intimate but we have shared

thoughts from time to time. You know, I

was once given the honor of reading his

                      fortune.

Unity takes hold of Janos hand, quite gently, almost

            reverentially.

                                UNITY

                      You've read his palms?

                                JANOS

Yes. But, of course, I cannot tell

                      you...

                                UNITY

                      Read mine.

He reverses her hold on his hands and lifts her palms to his

            lips.

                                JANOS

                      Of course, kind Unity.

     48 INT. LIVING ROOM 48

Many of the guests have left. Putzi, Marie and two other

GUESTS are seated around a card table. They are playing

            poker.

                                GUEST ONE (MALE)

                      Where has Janos disappeared to?

                                MARIE

English quail appears to be in season. I

assume he is on the hunt.

                                PUTZI

I have it on the best authority that this

                      quail resists capture.

                                MARIE

                      You're underestimating the hunter. Shall

                      we wager?

     49 INT. BEDROOM 49

Janos and Unity are seated on the bed. He is reading her

            palms.

                                JANOS

Most distinct. You must aim high. Your

place is not among the common.

                                UNITY

Of course not. But where is it?

                                JANOS

You were named Unity for what purpose?

                                UNITY

My father has an odd sense of humor. I

was born on the first day of the Great

                      War.

                                JANOS

It was not a joke. Fate works in strange

ways. He was made to name you Unity. Do

you see the way these lines intersect?

                                UNITY

                      Yes.

            He kisses her palm.

                                JANOS

They are your lines of fate. It is your

destiny to unite two great causes. Such

lines are shared by a very few.

Alexander, Frederick the Great, Joan of

                      Arc. And now, Unity Mitford.

Janos traces the lines then continues to trace his finger up

            Unity's arm.

                                UNITY

You say you've read his palms.

                                JANOS

                      Yes.

                                UNITY

Do he and I share these lines?

                                JANOS

                      Yes.

She pulls away from Janos and paces excitedly about the

            bedroom.

                                UNITY

Then it's sealed. I must meet him.

The card game still in progress. The sound of a DOOR OPENING

draws Marie's attention to the bedroom.

Unity comes out, quite happily agitated. A moment later,

Janos steps out. He shrugs to Marie. Marie reaches into her

lap purse and pulls out a 50DM note and hands it to Putzi.

Putzi is confused but then Unity walks past the table. He

turns and sees a dejected Janos. Putzi LAUGHS and looks at

            Marie.

Marie shrugs and smiles. The card game goes on.

                                                                 CUT TO:

51 INT. KITCHEN - LATER THAT EVENING 51

Putzi is pouring himself a drink. Through the door and in

the living room can be seen Marie, Unity, Diana, Janos and a

few others in the midst of a spirited discussion. Janos gets

up and comes into the kitchen and also pours himself a drink.

                                PUTZI

                      Thank you.

                                JANOS

                      What for?

                                PUTZI

For underestimating the commitment of a

                      true virgin.

                                JANOS

The game is not yet over.

They salute each other and drink.

                                JANOS

How are things settling in at the

                      Reichstag?

                                PUTZI

To tell the truth, old friend, not well.

                                JANOS

                      von Ribbentrop?

                                PUTZI

                      "von"? Affected little prick! The

Fuhrer and I go all the way back to '23,

to the very genesis of the Party. I've

always been his eyes and ears outside

                      Germany. And now...Ribbentrop! Foreign

Minister over me! I tell you, Janos,

it's almost enough to kill your faith in

                      that Jew baiter's omnipotence.

            Janos closes the door.

                                JANOS

Ribbentrop is a fool to the English.

                                PUTZI

                      He is a fool everywhere.

                                JANOS

That's as may be, but England must be

neutralized if the Fuhrer is to have his

way in the east. Ribbentrop cannot even

get in the front door of the House of

Lords. Without the support of that pack

of fools, England may well become a

                      threat.

                                PUTZI

                      Yes. But I don't see...

                                JANOS

If you want to get past von Ribbentrop,

you just have to open that door.

Janos pushes open the kitchen door and reveals Unity. She is

            LECTURING the others.

It begins to dawn on Putzi.

                                PUTZI

                      Ahh, yes...

                                JANOS

She needs some cleaning up. Her German

must improve. But with the right

counsel, she can be of great help to our

                      cause.

                                PUTZI

An English heroine for the cause of

                      National Socialism.

                                JANOS

No. An English heroine for the cause of

                      Almasy and Hanfstaengl.

They both LAUGH and toast each other.

                                PUTZI

Yes. But you must tell me: What's in it

                      for you?

                                JANOS

My wife's family has extensive holdings

in Ploesti and Silesia. Oil and coal.

If we're on the right side of Hitler's

plans for the east, we stand to do very

                      well indeed. Never underestimate the

                      financial potential of total war.

                                PUTZI

But will she go for it. Do we tell her

                      or rely on her gullibility?

                                JANOS

Promise her everything, tell her nothing.

She's not gullible, she's in love. The

gullible can be fooled to a point. But

someone in love? The possibilities are

                      limitless.

            They LAUGH.

                                                            DISSOLVE TO:
