Hmmm, I'd like to think I'd be as openhearted as Qwilleran, but then, I don't have a brilliant cat to guide me........I'd like to think I'd do much of what Qwill has done, what with scholarships, loans, etc. One thing I'd DEFINITELY buy is a radio station all my own, be the most eclectic thing on the air. If I lived in Moose County I know I'd pay small boys to go deface all the road signs leading into Pickax, so as to keep too many Down Belowers out--the town doesn't need anymore outsiders coming to spoil things. Of course, if anyone would volunteer to be the next Murder Victim they'd be brought in with full red-carpet treatment.....

If the Klingenschoen fortune were mine to spend, I'd get in contact with N.E. Borlaug at Texas A&M University and let him decide how to spend the bulk of it--he's an agronimist whose been credited with possibly saving more lives than anyone in history due to his work in Mexico and Africa in staving off mass starvation since the 1950's with new types of grains. I've been saving an article about his work in my sock drawer just in case I ever win the lottery.
After THAT load (of money/responsibility) was off my shoulders, I'd pay off all my bills (student loan first!) and those of my family, and set up retirement funds for all of us; then I'd retire quietly to a certain small town in Texas (I'm not giving the name out--it's already getting a little bit too popular--B&Bs, etc.) that's famous for it's rolling hills and laid-back atmosphere, good restaurants, wildflowers & antique roses, and its dairy products (said to be so good because the cows think they're in heaven). If they don't already have a community theater established, I'll start one and pretend to myself I'm living in Pickax (without the snow). The town is already full of eccentric and colorful characters--I've met them.

If I had the Klingenschoen fortune, I would buy some of the historic property in Moose County, and turn 2 of them into a children's home and a retirement home. Mrs. Cobb could be the head cook for one or the other. Then I would build a lovely home especially for cats, complete with a large indoor garden for them to frolic in as Moose County is quite cold. (Another Texan here.) Mrs. Bamba would be the live-in guardian of the cats until they found homes. I would buy a smaller historic home for myself, never letting on I was wealthy, and disperse additional funds anonymously to needy and worthwhile causes, area churches, etc. And buy a good warm coat!
