Pendroy Surname History Information

This site is intended to be a resource where persons researching genealogy, that have the name PENDROY in it, can find out some information. In addition, my intention is to document some of the historical details associated with the Pendroy surname in 1800s, 1700s, and earlier, if any information would be found of that period.

No person should consider this site as an official or primary source of information. This site is not an authoritative source of records. For that purpose one should rely on more official sources such as census records, land deeds, birth certificates, military, family Bibles, Church and civil and government records).

Since this site is intended for historical focus, it does not contain names of living Pendroy family members or other identifying information - for the protection of privacy. Almost all of the information is from the time period before 1900.  This site: "Pendroy Surname History Information", is genealogy and history information that is in my possession, and correct to the best of my knowledge, at the present point in time.

Information on the many collateral lines (especially), is often provided by other researchers.   In large part, a majority of information on-line here has come from other researchers. If I am not aware of  conflicting information, I generally use research information from others as provided to me, and  for collateral lines, especially. In most cases, I  do not realistically have time to thoroughly double check the vast quantity of research provided by other persons.

Therefore, this entire site is in effect, only my compiled personal opinion of what the "Pendroy Surname History Information" is. As the Website author/editor, I do make changes, deletions and additions as more accurate or further information comes available.

I have made every effort to insure information on-line here is correct. I welcome, and encourage any person to contact me if they believe there is an error of fact, or omission here. I will not be offended, and will be glad you contacted me. I want information online here to be correct. So, please feel free to contact me if you have additions or corrections.  Numerous  cousins and researchers are still providing important information.

I want to especially thank all of the friends, cousins & researchers who have contributed information that is on-line here.

To date - virtually  all surname Pendroy on this site have been traced back to Eli and Mary Pendroy, whose father was James Pendry. It has now been established with certainty that Eli Pendry, at some later date, (late 1700's or early 1800's) changed his name to Eli Pendroy. The reason for this has not been identified, and is not known by the author.

James Pendry was on the Flower Swift Revolutionary War lists along with a Henry Pendry. It is not known if Henry Pendry was a father, grandfather or brother, or other relationship to James Pendry. Recently, a Henry Pendry has been identified who received a Land Grant from Virginia Colony in 1717.   (in year 1717 in Isle of Wight, County Virginia Colony. )

PENDRY, JAMES, Quaker, Flower Swift's 3rd Undated Militia Roster.

View Quakers James Pendry (& Henry Pendry) on the Flower Swift 3rd Militia list from Revolutionary War.

If this Henry Pendry is the same Henry Pendry who was located with James Pendry (both of whom are on Revolutionary War Flower Swift Quaker lists together), this would make 1717 the date farthest back that the linked Pendry/Pendroy surname has been traced to - so far, to early Colonial America, and almost sixty years before the Revolutionary war. However, this scenario could only be possible if the Henry Pendry on the Flower swift Militia List were quite elderly, unless there was one or more generation in between named "Henry Pendry" also.

This has become an item of interest because a Henry Pendr(O)y has been found in 1800 South Carolina census records. However, the surname Pendry is numerous in the British Isles and also in some areas along the eastern coast of Colonial America, so the (any) direct link has not been established yet.

Henry Pendroy - On PAGE 117 of the microfilm of the 1800 Pendleton County South Carolina Census

Eli and Mary Pendroy both lived through a lot of early American history. Eli Pendroy was born in 1776, the year of the American Revolution, and died in 1865 at the close of the Civil War in Iowa at age 88.

Of course, some Pendroys in the earlier days stayed in the areas they lived in and/or migrated from:  (Virginias, Carolinas, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and other areas of the country).

Their early stories are those of American pioneers, and most people are proud of their pioneer heritage, if they have one. It would be difficult for anyone to read their stories, and not salute them as pioneers. As new territories opened up in the westward expansion and  Pendroys moved across America, they were often among the early settlers. Of course, many stayed in one place or other, along the way.

And, many Pendroys have gone to unrecorded places and/or  may now be lost in history, unknown to this author. The women, of course, in most cases  - married into other surnames, and are ancestors to some of the unknown cousins we all have out there. Today they could literally be in any area of the country.

Eli Pendroy was born as Eli Pendry to Quaker parents, (James and Jemimah (Reddick) Pendry) in Guilford County North Carolina in 1776. Mary Lop(p) was born in 1775.

In 1803, Eli Pendroy was in Ohio near the Caesar Creek township area of Greene County, Ohio near Xenia.  They were among the very first pioneers in Greene County, Ohio.

Mary Mariah Pendroy, called Mariah,    Greene County Ohio.  Born 1814.   Married William J.F. Krohn

Greene County, Ohio

In 1803, Eli Pendroy was documented in Ohio near  the Caesars  Creek township area of Greene County, Ohio. This area is south of Xenia and East of Dayton, Ohio.

In 1803 Ohio became the first territory  carved out of the Northwest Territory, and was opened for settlement. Ohio was rich with both pioneer/frontier/settler exploits and Native American history and events. The struggle that ensued as settlers moved in during the western expansion into Ohio territory was monumental, to say the least.

About two miles north of Xenia Ohio, lies a crossroads now called Oldtown (or Old Town) or Old Chillicothe. This area was the center of civilized Native American life in the Ohio Territory.

the Caesars  Creek township area of Greene County, Ohio.

Here, in the last half of the 1700s, the Shawnee/Delaware Nation(s) center/capitol was located. Oldtown in Greene County, Ohio was home of the great orator and Shawnee, Tecumseh. The Shawnee Tecumseh, and his brother Tenskwatawa "the Prophet", attempted to band together all the Indian tribes to stand against what they saw as the encroachment of the settlers into Indian land. Tecumseh was born in Chillicothe (Oldtown) in 1768.

The Shawnee in the Ohio River valley had been mobilizing a full-scale campaign beginning as early as 1775 to stop white settlers. The Shawnee Chief Blackfish is well known for repeatedly laying siege to Daniel Boone's Boonesborough beginning in 1775. When Daniel Boone was captured by the Shawnee in 1778, it was the Shawnee Village Oldtown or Chillicothe where he was held. Boone ultimately developed friendly relations with the Shawnee.

In 1797, James Galloway, Sr., a soldier of the Revolution and an Indian fighter, companion of Daniel Boone, came into the valley of the Little Miami with his family from Kentucky in 1797 and settled in the vicinity of the Indian Village, or Chillicothe, now and for many years known as Oldtown, just north of the city of Xenia. Twenty nine 29-year-old Tecumseh was taught to write and read by a James Galloway daughter named Rebecca and the two reportedly fell in love.   (Some say the "love affair" part may or may not be actually true, but the fact that she taught him to read and write English language was true) .

In 1808 Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa moved their Indian center from Oldtown/Chillicothe, Ohio to "Prophets Town" in Tippecanoe County, Indiana (junction of the Wabash and Tippecanoe rivers).

Events were set into motion in September 1809 when Governor/General Harrison got some Indian leaders to sign the Treaty of  Ft. Wayne, which ceded about three million acres of Indian lands to Ohio and Indiana Territory at a price of less than a penny an acre. This was the catalyst that started Tecumseh's attempts to form his envisioned inter-tribal confederacy to fight the settlers and/or invalidate the Ft. Wayne Treaty. But, at the end of day, the lack of an effective Indian civilization (effective government, legal system, education, land boundaries, deed system, infrastructure, organized military & etc.)  ultimately provided too many obstacles.

On November 7, 1811 at Prophets Town, Indiana Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison's militia defeated the Indians with a force of 1,000 men. After the battle the troops burned the evacuated Prophets Town to the ground.

The battle happened while Tecumseh was away, recruiting other tribes to join the Indian confederacy. Tecumseh had apparently warned his brother not to do battle (yet) against Harrison until Tecumseh returned with more men, but The Prophet was somehow provoked into attacking Harrison's forces anyway, resulting in a great Shawnee defeat, and a subsequent diminishment of The Prophet's status among the Indians.

Tecumseh returned later to Prophets Town and continued his struggle elsewhere to battle the white settlers.  Later, he thought aligning with the British in the War of 1812 was the last hope to battle the superior American numbers, organization, weaponry, and technology.

The British, for their part, thought the establishment of an Indian State north of the Ohio River could serve as a buffer between America and British Canada.

Tecumseh's "Prophets Town" in Tippecanoe County, Indiana (junction of the Wabash and Tippecanoe river

Tecumseh was commissioned a Brigadier General by the British and commanded a force of 2,000 native Americans from 30 tribes. In 1813 General Harrison moved north with 3,500 troops chasing the fleeing British. Tecumseh's troops stood and fought at the British flank - to cover the British retreat - as the British General Proctor and the Redcoats fled for their lives into Canada. Tecumseh was killed there protecting the British flank at the Battle of the Thames River, Ontario.

There ended Tecumseh's vision of any unified Indian confederacy which could be strong enough to fight the Americans. The various tribal leaders following Tecumseh drifted away to other places or where they had came from. The acclaim William Henry Harrison received for the Battle of Tippecanoe victory later helped Harrison to become the 40th US President in 1840.

Pendroy, Eli, Caesars Creek, 1804, came to what is now Jasper Township in 1803; lost his land, and Galloway gave him 100 acres.

Pendroy, James, Caesars Creek, 1819.

Pendroy, Jacob, Caesars Creek, 1819; Feb 6, 1817 married Margaret Boots.

Pendroy, Wm. E., Caesars Creek, 1826. (Note; William Ellis Pendroy)

Since I first read the published statement  "Pendry, Eli, Caesar Creek, 1804, came to what is now Jasper Township in 1803; lost his land, and Galloway gave him 100 acres",  I hoped I could find out  WHO Galloway was, and WHY he would give Eli Pendroy 100 acres of land.  I believe there may be an interesting piece of history behind that comment.

"Pendry, Eli, Caesar Creek, 1804, came to what is now Jasper Township in 1803; lost his land, and Galloway gave him 100 acres",

It is significant that the person who wrote the Greene County, Ohio history did not feel the first name of "Galloway" was needed. That indicates that this "Galloway" may have been so well known locally that use of his first name was not needed.

In researching the area history, one "James Galloway" was a regionally well known person around Xenia, Ohio. That is James Galloway Sr., who was one of the very first pioneers of Greene County, arriving there in 1797, before any significant settlement had occurred. The person in Public records deeding land to Eli Pendroy was "James Galloway". However, it is not known positively which James Galloway it was. This could have been a son or other relative of "James Galloway Sr."

Click to read more about the Pioneer James Galloway in Greene County, Ohio and view a picture of his restored pioneer cabin maintained in a  city park in Xenia, Ohio.

To date, I have not been able to determine the answer to the question of why James Galloway gave 100 acres of land to Eli Pendroy. That may well turn out to be a question that is never answered. So far in my research I have not seen many instances where it was published that someone gave a person 100 acres of land. The land deed transfers themselves are public records and are well documented.

The following records are in the Land Index.

1819 Vol. 8, page 81 - 100 Acres, Virginia Military District 2358 - Grantor: James  Galloway - Grantee: Eli Pendroy.

1819 Vol. 8, page 81 - 100 Acres, Virginia Military District 2358 - Grantor: Nancy Grimes Galloway - Grantee: Eli Pendroy.

1824 Vol. 9, page 217    47 Acres, Virginia Military District 2358 - Grantor: Eli Pendroy et. al.  - Grantee: Jacob Pendroy.

1824 Vol. 9, page 285   30 Acres, Virginia Military District 2353 - Grantor: Eli Pendroy et. al. - Grantee William A. Ellis.

Another important piece of information found in Greene County records is the documentation of Jacob Pendroy's Marriage to Margaret Boots,  including the actual handwritten marriage records using the last name "Pendroy", (Along with the Greene County Ohio 1825 Tax Records and Greene County, Ohio Military Land Deed Records) from Greene Co.  using the surname "Pendroy".)

Even though the surname of Jacob Pendroy is spelled "Pendry" in this publication, there is therefore no doubt that it is Jacob Pendroy, who married Margaret Boots and went to Indiana, and then Marion County, Iowa in the 1840s.

An interesting side note and an example of how variant spellings can be transcribed by a census takers or others  in the old days...the 1820 US Census of Caesar Creek Township of Greene County lists  Eli Pendri and Jacob Pendri. There are no other  Pendroy or Pendry Census entries for 1820 Greene county except Eli Pendri and Jacob Pendri.

Part of the problem is names were frequently mis-spelled in early America. I have found many variations in spellings in various publications of Pendroy including (most frequently) and as expected Pendry, but also Pendray, Penderey, Penderoy, Pendri, Pendrie, Pendery, and  Pendrey. (Pendry especially, Pendray and Pendrey and Pendery are each established surnames in there own right).

As just mentioned, Pendry was the surname Pendroy was derived from.

The other variations (Penderoy, Pendri, Pendrie and Penderey are all virtually non-existant or exist in very small numbers.)

How or why did Eli's last name change from Pendry to Pendroy? It is probable that the "why and how" of Eli Pendry's name change or evolution to Eli Pendroy may not be able to be ascertained. The surname may have been initially spelled that way in various places that kept legal or other records.

Another scenario could be that for unknown reasons Eli Pendry himself decided to change the surname spelling or to make it different into Pendroy. (Intentionally).

The Greene Co. Ohio 1825 Tax Rolls,  and also in  Greene Co. Military Land Deed Transfers use the surname Pendroy.

On page 296 of "Robinson's History of Green County",  this information on Eli Pendroy's known daughter Elizabeth Pendroy is printed.

Rueben Strong and his second wife, Barbara Boots, had "the following children John, Cynthia, Benjamin, Alfred, Elizabeth, Malinda, Minerva, Mary, [Napoleon B.] the subject of this mention being the youngest member of the family." (from A Portrait and Biographical Record of Delaware County, Indiana, (Chicago, A. W. Bowen & Co., publishers, 1894), p. 559). (Author note: Rueben Strong is a name that keeps surfacing in Pendroy genealogy research. He was the justice of the Peace that performed all the 3 Pendroy/Boots marriages in 1820s Greene County Ohio, and also went to Delaware County, Indiana with the Pendroy, Boots, Strong, Campbell, Bartlett, Dean, Krohn, Bantz and other families that were in Greene County Ohio together. Rueben Strong's father was Noah Strong, a noted Revolutionary War Soldier and Commissioned Officer that served in Vermont, listed in   "Revolutionary War Veterans of Greene County Ohio." Rueben Strong's second wife was Barbara Boots. The article states Barbara Boots died on Aug 24, 1835 near Albany Indiana.

Pendroys in Iowa

Many of the Pendroys left Indiana as the Iowa territory was opened up for settlement. Pendroy families, including those of Eli Pendroy , Jacob Pendroy , James Pendroy , Jacob Andrew Pendroy , James Martin Pendroy , and Eli H. Pendroy , settled in Marion County, Iowa - in (Summit Township) in 1849 to 1851.

The 1856 Census showed, as Heads of Household, all these known Pendroys were in the census living in the same general vicinity of Marion and Jasper County together: (old) Eli Pendroy, Jacob Pendroy, James Pendroy, Jacob Andrew Pendroy, William and America Jane (Pendroy) Burns, John and Nancy (Pendroy) Young, John C. and Mary E. (Pendroy) Marmon, Eli H. Pendroy, and Isaac and Elizabeth (Pendroy) Byers.

In addition: Sarah Ann (Pendroy) Burns, widow of Abraham P. Burns that died in Civil  War,  was also living in the general vicinity, in (Cambridge, Iowa area) Elkhart Township of Polk County, Iowa, about 40 miles away.  She lived with or near her daughter Margaret Anna (Burns) Zook (Mrs. Henry Seward Zook) in Cambridge Iowa.

The census data on-line here is generally just the oldest Pendroys, numerous others were their children and young adults, or relatives, and soon became their own families.

(Old) Eli Pendroy is in the 1856 Marion Co. IA. census. Eli Pendroy does have "Sr." written by his name in the 1856 census, and Eli H. Pendroy (that married Eliza Ann Grubb),  has Eli Pendroy Jr. written by the census taker. They are on the same page and it appears each was living alone near the other Pendroys.

This notation was confusing to me in my early work because I thought this may mean  those two Eli's were father and son.

But now it is known they were grandfather and grandson, with James Pendroy being Eli H Pendroy's father. In fact, one of the legal documents specifically states that Eli H. Pendroy was a son of James and  Mary Ann (Wiseman) Pendroy , and Eli H. Pendroy also signed a document stating that.

View 1860 Marion County census page showing on same page: Eli Pendroy, James  Pendroy, Eli H. Pendroy, and Jacob Pendroy  families.  Old Eli Pendroy (Born 1776) was living with his son Jacob Pendroy, who married Margaret Boots, and old Eli Pendroy was 83 years old at that time. It is interesting to note that old Eli Pendroy, and his son's Jacob Pendroy, and James Pendroy who married Mary Ann Wiseman, all listed their place of birth as North Carolina.

Jacob Pendroy is the first known Pendroy family to pioneer into the Marion and Jasper County Iowa area near Monroe, in 1849.  The 1850 census also records,  as was known, that Jacob Pendroy and family came 1 year earlier to Marion County in 1849.

In the "Marion County History of 1881" Jacob Pendroy is recorded on page number 687 Summit Township (Chapter III).

The petition was granted and the first Monday in April fixed as the time for holding the organization election." John C. Donnel was appointed to carry out the provisions of the order, and the house of Jacob C. Brown was designated as the place for holding the first election."

In addition, some of the old Pendroys were in  the first Methodist Episcopal (Methodist) Church in Marion County, Iowa in 1855 near Otley Iowa, which is 4 miles S.E. of Monroe, Iowa.

Apparently, this old church is still standing and is a house being lived in, in Otley, Iowa.

Author note: Surnames Young, Honnold, and Donnel were all married to Pendroys and many were neighbors. Mrs. John Young was Nancy M Pendroy b 29 May, 1829 Ohio - m John William Young. (Nancy M. was Jacob Pendroy's daughter)

Margaret Jane (Berry) Donnel,  born 02/23/1848 was  William Preston and Rachel (Pendroy) Berry's daughter. Rachel was Jacob's daughter.  Margaret Jane Berry married Thomas S. Donnel who was the son of John C. and Nancy Donnel.

John Baldwin Pendroy (son of James M. Pendroy) was married to Forrest Belle Honnold.

Author Note: The Monroe area of Jasper County Iowa is in extreme southern Jasper county., near the Marion County line.  In 1850 more Pendroy families lived south of the nearby county line in Marion County Iowa - about 3 to 4 miles away around Otley and Red Rock. As was known, 83 year old Eli Pendroy was living with 66 year Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy in the 1860 Marion County IA.census.

In 1856 census 10 year old (Step) Grand daughter Jane Mosier is listed in Jacob Pendroy household and states she was born in Mills County Iowa.

Much early information about Jacob Pendroy was gleaned from a letter from Nellie Byers, written several decades ago now, which I received from a Pendroy family from Aberdeen SD in the 1980s.   The letter is in the possession now of many families doing research on the surname Pendroy. In fact, Nellie Byers' letter was in a way the genesis of my research and certainly this site.

Pendroys in North Dakota

Pendroy Migration to & McHenry County North Dakota

Many Pendroys that were living around Monroe, Iowa pioneered into Mc Henry County, North Dakota in 1880s. The biographies of many of these are featured below.

All or almost all, were the extended families and In-laws of children of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy.

In 1883 James Martin Pendroy and sons and Jacob Andrew Pendroy and sons, and other extended Pendroy families traveled west in covered wagons to the Dakotas and founded Pendroy, North Dakota.

(North Dakota) Pioneer Biographies and Pictures

These biographies contain information about Pendroys who pioneered as settlers in North Dakota. These Pendroys left together from Iowa in 1883 and founded Pendroy, North Dakota, in the Velva area in McHenry County. All were among the very first settlers of McHenry County N.D. in 1883, and founders of Pendroy, North Dakota.

Later in Montana, two members of this group - Levi Boots Pendroy and James Andrew Pendroy founded the present day town of Pendroy, Montana.

It can be said that this group of Pendroys (descendants of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy and some of their In-Laws ) had impact on McHenry County North Dakota in the 1880s.

The list of "FIRSTS" to their credit in McHenry Co. ND deserves appreciation.

Pendroy ND Post Office, the 2nd one in McHenry Co ND, was established in June, 1883, and J. M. Pendroy was commissioned as Post Master.
James M. Pendroy (b. 1832) was elected County Judge of McHenry Co. North Dakota.
They took an active part in the organization of McHenry County, North Dakota. James Martin Pendroy (b 1832) was one of the first county commissioners elected, and filled that office for a number of years.
The first sermon preached in the English language was delivered by Rev. E. P. Royce at the house of J. M. Pendroy, December 30 1885.
The first public school taught in the Oak Valley District, was by Mrs. Eliza Masteller, and Miss Janey Strong in 1886, there being two school houses erected in the district that year.
The first public printing done for the county was done by Perry A. Pendroy on a hand press in June 1885.
Thomas F. Berry and wife built and ran the Hotel Berry in Velva.
The Pendroys brought the first purebred Hereford bulls into McHenry County. They drove 125 head of cattle overland when they settled, travelling 15 miles a day with the herd. The cattle belonged to Jacob Andrew Pendroy.
In later years Levi Boots Pendroy and Jim Andrew Pendroystarted the town of Pendroy in Montana, which is still in existence.
James Martin (Born 1862) Pendroy's oldest daughter, Lizzie, was the first white child born in McHenry county, North Dakota.

Pendroy,  Montana

Two members of this group - Levi Boots Pendroy and James Andrew Pendroy founded the present day town of Pendroy, Montana.

According their own family branch, both James Andrew Pendroy and Levi Boots Pendroy started the town of Pendroy, Montana. I base this on the written comment in 1941 biography of James (b 1862) Martin Pendroy, written by his son Charles Pendroy in 1941.

Then Levi B. Pendroy later had the town of Pendroy, Montana named after him in 1916, primarily because of his association with the railroad that went to Pendroy, Montana..

Daniel and Jemima J. (Pendroy) Pace - Mosier

Jemima Jane Pendroy was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy

1999 Grave stone of Daniel and Jemima J. (Pendroy) Mosier at Silent City cemetery

Marion County Iowa marriage records used the name "Jennie Pendroy" for her once, and also "JJ Pendroy".  She was born March 21, 1821.

According to marriage records in Delaware County Indiana, Jemima Jane Pendroy had earlier married Horatio Pace in Delaware county Indiana on 12-02-1841. View marriage information of Horatio Pace and and Jemima Jane Pendroy

Go to main PACE page

Jemima Jane (Pendroy) Pace and her 3 sons Jacob Horatio Pace, James Madison Pace,  and Marion Pace came to Marion County Iowa with Jemima's parents Jacob and Margaret Pendroy some time in the late 1840's.

The 1850 Marion County Iowa census records of Jacob and Margaret Boots Pendroy household list 8 year old "Marion  Pace", born 1842 in Indiana. This "Marion Pace" was one of Horatio and Jemima Jane (Pendroy) Pace's children.

The exact circumstances of why the 8 year old Marion Pace was at the house of grandparents Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy in 1850 during the county census are not known. The child may have just been visiting when the census taker stopped by. Typically they wrote down who ever was in the house.

Recently I found an 1858 legal document that appears to have the original signature of Jacob Pendroy and J. M. Pendroy.

The document appoints Jacob Pendroy legal Guardian of  Jacob Pace, James Pace and Marion Pace. (These Pace children were Jacob's grand children, sons of Jemima Jane Pendroy Pace - later Mosier.)

Also found an ink  HANDWRITTEN NOTE DATED 13 SEPT. 1858 SIGNED BY JEMIMA MOSIER, JAMES  MADISON PACE AND MARION PACE TO THE JUDGE REQUESTING THE SAME GUARDIANSHIP of the heirs of Horatio Pace.

Also, found 23 Year old year old Jacob Andrew Pendroy and 26 year old Margaret (Brown) Pendroy, and their household had 11 year old Jacob Pace there at census time in 1856.

Jemima Jane Pendroy (Pace) later married Mr. Daniel Mosier. Daniel Mosier had children from a previous marriage. Jemima Jane Pendroy and Horatio Pace also had the 3 sons of their own together from that previous marriage.

Daniel Mosier and Jemima also had children of their own together. Jemima is buried in Monroe, Iowa, with husband Daniel Mosier. Author note: Mr. Daniel Mosier is a name that is encountered frequently in early history of the area. In 1846, and 1847 and 1849 the History of Jasper County mentions his selection as a Grand Jury member.

In 1847, the Assessment rolls for the county of Jasper showed Daniel Mosier and is listed with the assessed value of his farm. In 1850 Daniel Mosier was selected as a juror for the first Coroner's Inquest on April 12, 1850. According to the Monroe Mirror article about the first "Old Settlers" Reunion, Dan Mosier was in the area in 1843. That is the year  Monroe Iowa was "officially settled".

In addition "Mrs. Joel Worth and Dan Mosier were introduced as the oldest old settler woman and man  now living" (In 1897 Dan Mosier would have been 83. The article cited six other people present who were there in 1843: (James A. Tool, John M. Tool, Allan Tice, David Tice, Mrs. Huldah McClintock and John Williams.)

Isaac and Elizabeth Ann (Pendroy) Byers

Much early information about Jacob Pendroy was gleaned from a letter from Nellie Byers, written several decades ago now, which I received from a Pendroy family from Aberdeen SD in the 1980s.   The letter is in the possession now of many families doing research on the surname Pendroy. In fact, Nellie Byers' letter was in a way the genesis of my research and certainly this site.

Elizabeth Ann Pendroy was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret Boots Pendroy. She was born Dec. 17, 1816 in Indiana.

Elizabeth Pendroy married Isaac Byers. The Isaac Byers family was also in Marion County Iowa in the 1856 census - volume 57.

Isaac Byers 40 M. Ohio - Farmer
Elizabeth (Pendroy) Byers 40 F. Indiana
Eli Byers 19, M. Indiana
John Byers 17, M. Indiana
Rachel A. Byers 10, F. Indiana
Jacob Byers 8, M. Indiana
Rebecca Byers 5, F. Indiana
Noah Byers 2, M. Iowa,  .
Had been residents of Iowa 3 years. Came in 1853.

Isaac and Elizabeth (Pendroy) Byers appear to have originally gone to Iowa in 1853, three years prior to the 1856 census. Their youngest son, Noah, was born in Marion Co. in August of 1854. They were in Marion Co. for the 1856 census.

It was initially believed by this author, and was stated on this site that Elizabeth (Pendroy) Byers went to North Dakota with other Pendroys.

However, recent further research from the Bolton family indicates several years before the 1881 – 1883 Pendroy migration to McHenry Co. North Dakota, Isaac and Elizabeth (Pendroy) Byers ended up together at an 80-acre farm in Winchester, Van Buren County, Iowa, and both are buried at nearby Winchester Cemetery.

In fact, Noah Byers, their youngest son, married in Van Buren Co. in 1878 and remained there until after the death of his parents at Winchester.

However, it is possible that the Byers family may have moved briefly to ND but then left at some time fairly soon thereafter to return to Winchester. Hopefully, more information on this issue will be forthcoming in the future. Because, within a few years, evidence shows they ended up together at an 80-acre farm in Winchester, Van Buren County, Iowa, and both are buried at nearby Winchester Cemetery.

Elizabeth and Isaac may have simply moved in with, or close to that homestead at Winchester. Noah's first five children were born in that area. This scenario would have Elizabeth being there with the grandkids of "her baby" Noah. It is not until several years after the death of his parents that Noah and his wife and family move to Voltaire, ND in McHenry County near where the Pendroys settled. [Probably 1900]. This may have been because his brother Jacob [appears to have gone two years earlier], as well as all of those Pendroy relatives, encouraged him to come.

Another issue, is Isaac and Elizabeth (Pendroy) Byers are believed to have had five daughters and four sons. Three daughters were stated from a source as having died young, (One was supposed to have died and is buried in Delaware County, Indiana, and the others on Muscatine Island in Mississippi River."

However, there are not details or evidence to establish what happened to their children. There is sketchy information, which states there was the older daughter Netty Byers, who appeared on a list somewhere as an older sister to Eli Byers. It may make some sense since she purportedly died in Indiana where Eli Byers was also born.

(One source of Byers information I have received, stated that there was an oldest daughter named "Netty". This "Netty" was said to the oldest but a birth year and date was not given. Netty would have been born before the Eli Byers, mentioned above. This information about Netty has not been documented from other sources to date. (Another puzzle hopefully resolved one way or the other in the future.)

It is interesting to find out that a US Medal of Honor winner in Civil War (Joseph Stickels) is buried in the Monroe, Iowa cemetery. Also he was a brother of David Stickels that married Rachel (Pendroy) Berry's daughter. For these two reasons I have included his story on this site.

John and Nancy (Pendroy) Young

Known biographical Information

Nancy Pendroy was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy. She was born May 29, 1829 in Ohio. Nancy May Pendroy married John Young - Delaware Co. Indiana 03-26-1845.

Nancy (Pendroy) Young died Sept. 18 1903 in Velva, North Dakota in McHenry County. Nancy moved west into the Dakota Territory,  with   the Pendroys that founded Pendroy, North Dakota in 1883. Since records state John Young died July 12, 1883 at  about age 60, it appears Nancy Young was newly widowed when she moved to North Dakota with all the Pendroy migration.

Nancy May (Pendroy) Young, and her husband John William Young and children, came to the Monroe, Iowa area (near the Marion and Jasper County line) either with, or shortly after her parents, Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy.

The 1850 census found John and Nancy (Pendroy) Young in extreme southern Jasper County, near Monroe, IA., just across the county line north of where Jacob lived in Summit Township in Marion County, IA. Here is the 1850 census information. Somehow the family is in both county census records. Don't know if they moved or because they lived on or near county line.

Jemima was old Eli Pendroy's Quaker mother's name. Since this Jemima J is not shown in current records of adult children  I have for this family, details of what became of this Jemima J. child are not known.

Nancy's older sister Jemima Jane (Pendroy) Mosier was their neighbor. She was married to Dan Mosier in a second marriage for both of them.

After the civil war, in 1883 through 1885 several Pendroy families went west in a covered wagon to Dakota Territory. This Pendroy line was descended from Eli Pendroy and Jacob Pendroy, and founded what was referred to as the Pendroy Colony in the North Dakota Territory that became Pendroy, North Dakota near the current towns of Velva and Towner N. D. in the Mouse/Souris River area in north central North Dakota. (McHenry County).

Later in Montana, two members of this group - Levi Boots Pendroy and James Andrew Pendroy founded the present day town of Pendroy, Montana.

After the civil war, in 1883 through 1885 several  Pendroy families went west in  covered wagons to Dakota Territory. This was referred to as the Pendroy Colony (or Pendroy Settlement) in the North Dakota Territory. That colony became Pendroy, North Dakota near the current towns of Velva and Towner N. D. in the Mouse/Souris River area in north central North Dakota. (McHenry County).

(Author Note: Velva refers to Velva, North Dakota. (McHenry County - 30 miles SE of Minot ND). The "Souris" river in North Dakota was known as the " Mouse" river.)

The Souris (Mouse) River runs right through Velva, North Dakota.

The 1955 article on Levi Boots Pendroy's death in the Choteau "Acantha" states: "Pendroy was born in Otley , IA., and as a young man in company with his father and three brothers, traveled in a covered wagon to the Mouse River of North Dakota and settled in that area. Later a post office was established and named Pendroy, North Dakota.

He was a Democrat in his political convictions until the late war, when he became a Douglas man, but later in life a Republican. His profession was that of Veterinarian Surgeon, and in pursuit of it he traveled in four kingdoms. His memory of people and places, as well as events, was wonderful, and made him a most interesting companion.

He came to this country in 1833, landing in New York. from which city he proceeded to Greene Co Ohio, where he followed his  profession of Veterinary surgeon for a period of four years. At the end of that time he came to Delaware County, Indiana.

Author note: The Spelling of Mary (Mariah)  Pendroy's name was found once as "Pendri" and once as "Pendry" in the publication. But the actual written marriage record spelled it "PENDROY". This is encountered several times in the  old publications.

A little puzzle out in New York... There is a street named Pendroy Street in East Meadow, New York. This is on Long Island, New York and is about 15 miles east of New York City. The area is East Meadow, (Long Island) New York. Of course, most streets have a name, but how this one was named is unknown. When the street was named is completely unknown. I am curious if there were Pendroys that ever lived in the area, and if not, where Pendroy Street got its name? The author does not know details of the connection to New York's Long Island area at the present time. Since the name "Pendroy" is so uncommon it is a source of curiosity.
