The Minnesota Territory was
formed in March of 1849. At that time, it included an eastern
portion of
the present day North and South Dakota. It's Territorial
Legislature
authorized the formation of nine counties from the Minnesota Territory
the
same year. The original nine counties were: Benton, Dakota,
Itasca,
Pembina, Mahkahto, Ramsey, Wabasha, Washington and Wahnahta.
Though the boundaries have been altered
considerably over the years, 5 of these still exist. During
1999, these will be celebrating their Sesquicentennial anniversary (150
years): Dakota, Itasca, Ramsey, Wabasha and Washington.
Minnesota was admitted as the thirty-second state in May
1858.
***
In the following list, the county names which are not directly linked (are not underlined and
highlighted) no longer exist under that
name in present day Minnesota. Though some of the county names
which are no longer in
use have been included, this list is not meant to be a comprehensive
list of all county names which have been used. The present day
county link follows the name of an old-time county.
***
Note: Both County and Town sites often include information
about the areas history in addition to reporting addresses for the
contacts for vital records, deeds, etc., so they are often quite good
sites to begin
researching both history and genealogy. The towns of each county
are
listed under the county name. If a town name is highlighted it
links
to the official town site, or a close approximation of one.
