A Brief History of Monroe Township
(pubished resources)

Monroe township was organized in March, 1840, and Isaac Price was appointed inspector of elections.  The first election was held on the last Saturday in June, 1840, and James C. Todd was elected justice of the peace.  The first log school house was built on the farm of Amos Ball, in 1833.  The Dunkard church was established in 1831.  Other church denominations followed as the populaton increased.

Among the early settlers were Thomas Ross, Samuel Ross, Joseph Beckner, Amos Ball, John Flra, Jacob Zook, George Cline, Jonathan Barnard and others.

There are two towns in Monroe Township:  Flora and Bringhurst.  Flora (also known as Fountain City) is an incorporated town.  It was first platted, for John Flora, in 1872, as Flora Station.  In 1916, Flora was reported to have a population of one thousand six hundred, and located on the Vandalia railroad which later became the Pennsylvania railroad.  The town of Bringhurst was reportedly named for Col. Thomas H. Bringhurst, a former owner of the Logansport Journal.  Bringhurst (also known as "U Know" and "Plank") was platted in 1873, for James N. A. Moss, Moses Plant and Seth Burris.  It is also located on the same railroad route and is only about a mile south of Flora (see aerial view of the Flora-Bringhurst area).  In 1916, Bringhurst had about six hundred inhabitants.  Though Flora and Bringhurst were reported to each have "fine high school buildings," in 1916, the Bringhurst school was later discontinued, and, in 1927, Bringhurst students were transferred to the Flora school.  (See the Carroll Consolidated School Corporation website, at http://www.carroll.k12.in.us/.)
