- Historical events and circumstances, whether they are natural
disasters, such as fires and earthquakes, or political turmoir, will
often influence the availability of records, or their locations.
Awareness of such events
may help you to learn more about your ancestors, and possibly lead you
to
additional research resources.
- Of note in Romanian history:
With the Decree nr. 358 of December 1st, 1948, the whole Romanian
Church united
with Rome was declared illegal. Many Bishops and Priests were
executed
or emprisoned. In 1964, Church-state relations changed for the
better,
and in 1990 conditions improved, with the establishment
of diplomatic relation with the Holy See and a restored
hierarchy. (See: Relatii

The
Catholic Church in Russia: Its History, Present Situation and Problems,
Perspectives,
by Thaddaeus Kondrusiewicz, Apostolic Administrator of European Russia,
Taken from remarks originally presented at The Aid to the Church in
Russia
Conference, January 17, 18 1998 in Northern Virginia, U.S.A. - "...The
first
Catholic parishes in Russia were established in the twelfth century:
one
in Smolensk and two others in Novgorod. Seven centuries ago five
Catholic parishes were established, one in Azov and four in Astrakhan.
Finally, the
Catholic Church’s normal hierarchical structure was established in
Russia
in 1782, when the Mogilev Archdiocese was created to cover the largest
territory
in the world. Thus before 1917 there were already two dioceses in
Russia:
Mogilev with its episcopal see in St. Petersburg and Tiraspol with its
episcopal
see in Saratov...Unfortunately the year 1917 came. An incredible
persecution
of religion was organized..."
"...At the second partition of Poland (1793) five Latin sees fell to
Russia,
Kamenetz, Kieff, Livonia, Lutzk, and Vilna..." see Mohileff
from
the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia Online for additional history.
